January is such a great time for red carpet appearances. The Golden Globe Awards were only a week ago and now we have the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards red carpet which was held at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles on Saturday 18th January 2014 (LA/USA time). You can find a full list of winners here. Unfortunately I wasn’t as taken with the looks on this red carpet as I was at the Golden Globes. While there were many beautiful looks to choose from that I struggled to select only five, I was also disappointed with a fair few. I actually struggled to keep my ‘didn’t love’ list as short as it is, but that was mainly due to personal preference than looking really bad.
1. Anna Gunn
While her character on Breaking Bad may not be a fan favourite, I think Anna nailed it with this look. This sparkling blue Monique Lhullier Resort 2014 gown with black beading is elegant and the cut of the dress really suits Anna’s figure. She didn’t over-accessorise, but I thought it was brilliant that she carried a personalised Edie Parker clutch with the Breaking Bad logo. While some criticise her hair for being too casual, I think she looks fantastic.
2. Elizabeth Rohm
I’m not overly familiar with Elizabeth, who stars in American Hustle, but I really like this look. While this long-sleeved Marchesa Resort 2014 dress is a little bit bridal, as I’m planning a wedding, I happen to love it. I love the detail, I love how the dress hugs her body. She was spot on with her hair and makeup. She looks like a star.
3. Hannah Simone
This may not be a ‘wow’ factor outfit, but I love Hannah’s look. Again, it’s probably a little bit bridal, but I love the soft flow of this Marchesa Resort 2014 dress on the gorgeous New Girl actress (I think Marchesa is loving bridal at the moment). I love the gathering of the gown and the sheer overlay. I also think the chiffon flowers around the neckline make for the perfect accessory. I think she looks lovely.
4. Lupita Nyong’o
My word has Lupita made her fashion mark. I have seen a few different red carpet looks from her in the past few weeks and she’s looked beautiful in every single one of them. This gorgeous Gucci number is another winner. Lupita sure knows how to rock a good solid colour. I love the gold and turquoise flower embellished straps which double as statement neck ware. Her makeup complimented this stunning gown. A definite winner in my book.
5. Isla Fisher
Isla Fisher in Oscar de la Renta, what more can I say? She looks like classic old-school Hollywood in this satin gown. Her tousled curls, bold red lips and Bulgari jewellery just complete this perfect look. I think what I like the most is it just seems so effortless and she just looks amazing.
I have to give a shout-out to Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Lawrence, Camilla Alves, Kaley Cuoco, Amy Adams, Elisabeth Moss, Emilia Clarke and Laura Carmichael just to name a few (haha).
1. Kerry Washington
I thought Kerry looked really good at the Golden Globes but this look is just not working for me. I’ve never been a huge fan of the crop top look and this Prada ensemble didn’t change my mind. A lot of people have loved the fuchsia cropped-top with hand-embroidered crystals, paillettes and tiny flowers, but I think she could have done better. I’m not a fan of the Mikado silk skirt either. What do you think? Are you a lover?
2. Michelle Dockery
I’m really disappointed to put Michelle’s look on my ‘didn’t love’ list because I think her hair and makeup are perfect, but I did not like this J Mendel gown. I felt that the neckline was far too low and caused the look of sagging. While I love a structured dress, this wasn’t the most flattering and would have looked better if the structure finished at the waistline and with a bit more support. This look was not my favourite.
3. Amanda Peet
I think Amanda is a beautiful woman but she consistently seems to make bad fashion choices on the red carpet. Maybe it’s just her personal style, but I just don’t get it. I’m not sure who designed the dress, but there is too much going on. It’s an interesting length, the sleeves seem a bit out of place and the abstract floral print is very busy. I’m waiting for her to ‘wow’ me on the red carpet because I think she has the potential to.
I’d love to hear what you all thought of the fashion choices on the red carpet! Who were your favourites? Which fashion picks do you think missed the mark?
Just a kind reminder: no nastiness please. Celebrities are still people so you can critique their fashion choices, but don’t be nasty about it.
