Forget the Digital Divide, The Digital Bulldozer is coming

May 6, 2013 in Celebrity, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Music, News, Politics, Technology

I am worried about radio in the country. Not the WHOLE country, mind you, just the parts of it politicians don’t visit unless something is wet, burnt or wind blown, i.e. “the country”. What worries me is digital radio. In cities digital radio may be a wonderful thing, more choices, better quality, I hear you may even be able to pause a live broadcast. Wonderful things. What I am worried about is the thing that radio was meant to be for – getting across information. A few years ago, a lot of “regional” stations were bought up by radio networks. [...]

“Never Say Never” And Other Stupid Sayings

April 22, 2013 in Anecdotes, Celebrity, Entertainment, Music, People

I have a friend at work who I love dearly. She’s my work BFF, and our friendship has jumped the work fence and we’ve become friends outside of the workplace. But something this friend of mine does has freaked me out a little: She’s started quoting Justin Bieber. Now the situation isn’t completely horrific, it’s not heaps of different Bieber quotes, it’s just the same thing over and over again. ”Never Say Never.” She applies it to so many things! Me: “N, I don’t see myself getting married again” N: “You know what Justin Bieber says: Never say never!” Me: “I feel like [...]

Young, Famous, Rich…and Happy?

April 16, 2013 in Body Image, Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV, Gender, Health, Lifestyle, Mental Health, Music, Work

As a little girl I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a singer, a rock star. I’d have loads of cash, I’d help out those I loved, it would be glamorous and life would be easy. It turns out the path to achieving fame and success at a young age seems to have a nasty aftertaste. The teenage years are awkward for everyone. I’d hate to have mine played out in the public eye, being scrutinized and torn apart by the media and lurking paparazzi. Maybe that’s what has sent so many young ‘starlets’ over the edge. Possibly [...]

My Greatest Fear

April 11, 2013 in Entertainment, Mental Health, Mothers, Music, Parenting, Work

“I have a dream. I will be famous. I will sing or I will die trying.” “You may never be famous. Most people don’t make it.” “You’re not listening to me. I will make it or I will die trying.” The dreams of a 17 year old girl. The determination you can’t argue with, the determination you can’t deny. So what happened? Where did that 17 year old go? This time, this time I’ll tell you the truth. I had a plan. I knew how many people make it in singing so I knew I’d need to find another way. [...]

I’ve planned my funeral; does this mean I’m morbid?

March 5, 2013 in Health, Music, People, Self

I have planned my funeral. I have a will in which I have left friends mementos of our friendship. My worldly goods have been allocated a home for when I am no longer here. I have a list of the music I want played, the hymns I wan t sung, the preacher I want to have preach.  Readings/poetry I want read. Which church the funeral will be at. I have picked the colours for floral arrangements. I have stipulated where I am to be buried. I am an organ donor with conditions- I don’t want to donate EVERY organ [...]

Style: Monique’s Oscar’s Fashion Picks

February 25, 2013 in Celebrity, Entertainment, Fashion, Film & TV, Music, Style

It’s Hollywood’s night of nights. The one we’ve all (ok, maybe just me) been waiting for. The 85th Annual Academy Awards was held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and was hosted by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. But who cares about that, we’re all in it for the fashion right? I’m kidding of course, it’s the biggest awards show of the season and it’s definitely all about who takes home the golden statue. But while we’re waiting for all the winners to be announced, lets have a look at the fashion. Again, there were SO many looks that I loved but I can’t [...]

Saying Goodbye To The First CD I Ever Bought

February 15, 2013 in Anecdotes, Music, Technology

The first CD I ever bought was A Walk Across The Rooftops by The Blue Nile. That was in 1983. Unfortunately, I couldn’t listen to it until 1985, because it took me two years to save up enough money to buy a CD player with my Student Allowance (back in the days when the Government actually paid you to go to Uni). I bought it because I liked their single, Stay, and I had read a review that mentioned the album had won CD of the year. (I can’t remember what award it was.) It wasn’t the first album I ever bought, [...]

Why I’m Disappointed That Gotye Won At The Grammys

February 11, 2013 in Celebrity, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Music, News

Look, I don’t want to come across as a sour-puss – nor do I want to rain on Gotye’s parade, or seem like I’m infected with some kind of tall poppy syndrome – but I’m kind of disappointed that Gotye won a couple of Grammys today. It’s not that I don’t think he’s talented or deserving of success…it’s just that I think there are so many other unsung Australian artists who deserve to get a Grammy ahead of Gotye. I mean, how is it that Nick Cave has never won a Grammy? What about Paul Kelly? What about Australian music legends like The Go-Betweens, [...]

Taking Advantage Of Bad Luck and Boredom

February 5, 2013 in Anecdotes, Music, People, Society, Travel, Work

Recently on my way home, I got stuck on a bus in the middle of Sydney Harbour Bridge. There had been a 6 car pile-up and nearly all the north-bound lanes were blocked as emergency services cleared the wreckage and treated the injured. There’s nowhere to go once you’re on the bridge…we couldn’t step off and just walk to the footpath…there isn’t one. We were stuck! When I was younger, this would have been a difficult situation for me. I didn’t cope well with bad luck and boredom when I was in my 20s and 30s. I would have been angry with whoever had [...]

Beyonce Halftime Superbowl Performance

February 4, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV, Music

Couldn’t resist posting this video. As a trained singer, I’m a pretty tough critic on professional singers, partly because there are a lot of famous people who shouldn’t be, and partly because it should be me, damnit! But I absolutely adored this half time show. I was GLUED TO THE SCREEN. Beyonce dominated.  Watch the video. It’s 14min of your life you’ll want to relive immediately. What did you think of Beyonce’s Superbowl performance? Did you watch the rest of the game?
