It’s been another big week in the celebrity world and this week we’re doing a celeb post tag team as our usual host, the lovely Monique, has fallen ill but the media stops for no man! So I’ll do my best to fill her shoes and, as always, you can read ‘the low down according to mon’ for this week here. To try to be a bit less confusing, I will put all the bits I’ve written in italics. – T.
1. Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes arrested
‘Hey Dad!’ star Robert Hughes has been arrested after a 2 year international investigation. The scandal following Sarah Monahan’s explosive accusations, aired on A Current Affair, may finally be resolved with Monahan tweeting she was “crying with happiness”. The scandal could have larger implications for network executives as Monahan claims they knew of the ongoing assault of at least her, if not the other 4 alleged victims, one of which was Simone Buchanan, also a cast member on ‘Hey Dad!’.
This whole scandal makes me feel a bit sick and although I believe in innocence until proven guilty, and do not wish to condemn anyone in any way, I have to admit I find the idea of a network covering up this kind of thing believable, when you consider the ongoing sexual assault of Judy Garland and others by Metro Goldwynn Meyer for many years, stating in an interview once “He’d often say the reason is this girl sings from the heart. And with that, his hand would find my left breast. I’d often think I was lucky I didn’t sing with another part of my anatomy.”
I can only hope times have changed.
2. Natalie Portman ties the knot
Little Aleph’s parents made it official over the weekend. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied are married! The couple who met on the set of Natalie’s Oscar-winning film Black Swan, were married under the stars in a Jewish ceremony at a private location near Big Sur, California. Pictures have surfaced of the blushing bride who looked gorgeous in a Rodarte gown with a modest high neckline, together with a tea-length cocktail hemline and sheer, full-length sleeves.
The traditional ceremony took place after sundown on Saturday in front of 60 close friends and family including Diane Sawyer and director husband Mike Nichols, Ivanka Trump, Macaulay Culkin and Rashida Jones. The guests were treated to a vegetarian feast (Natalie has been vegan since 2009) and were apparently dancing until 2:30am. Even though they aren’t official photos, I love the photos that have surfaced online of this wedding as both Natalie and Benjamin look so happy and in love. It’s absolutely beautiful. The couple announced their engagement in December 2010 and welcomed their first child, a son Aleph, in June 2011. Masel tov!
3. JLaw gets a HUGE payrise
Jennifer Lawrence has reportedly received a huge pay rise to appear in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and apparently Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth aren’t happy about it. After being paid only (and yes, I said only) $500,000 for the first instalment of The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence wanted a pay rise and rightfully so considering the film made over $680 million worldwide. The young actress was able to negotiate a pay rise of $9.5 million, bringing her salary to $10 million for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Josh and Liam are asking for the $2 million they’ve been offered to be bumped up to $5 million or they’re threatening to walk. “When stars are negotiating their contracts, these things can happen and stars will try and bump up their salaries,” a source said, going on to elaborate “With the success of the first movie, they feel that $5 million is a more suitable fee and are haggling with the studio before dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on their deals. And they have even said they may not return for the sequel, which they hope will be a bargaining chip for a bigger pay packet”. And, fair enough, it’s a bit of a big pay gap between $2 million and $10 million, even though Lawrence’s role is more important to the success of the story. Read more here.
4. Jason Segel leaving HIMYM?
Is Jason Segel leaving How I Met Your Mother? That’s the rumour that has been floating around after an Austrian website quoted him as saying “It’s great to do some ‘rated R’ stuff again, because I’ve been playing the nice guy for quite a long time now. That’s why I’m gonna quit How I Met Your Mother after the eighth season.” Don’t get too upset just yet, a rep for Segel said “perhaps something got lost in translation, but season nine hasn’t even been addressed yet”. The truth is, none of the cast have discussed their contracts past season eight with studio executives at CBS. He has said previously that season eight would be it for him, but if creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have a good storyline, he would stay on. In all honesty, I wouldn’t blame him if he did want to leave, eight years is a long time to be playing the same role and he probably feels it’s time to move on. And, really, I just want to meet the mother!
5. Joss Whedon signs on for The Avengers Sequel
In news that pleased nerds everywhere (there were cries of “Thank God” in my house) Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the sequel to this year’s biggest blockbuster ‘The Avengers’. Chairman and CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, made the announcement this Tuesday. Marvel released the following statement:
“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.” Source
The Avengers 2 is set for release in 2015.
Just for fun…
Everybody loved Pete and Debbie from the 2008 comedy Knocked Up (well I thought they were hilarious) and we get to see them again in the Knocked Up sequel, This Is 40.
Hope everyone has had a fantastic week and tell us…
