Why I Care New Zealand Voted in Favour of Marriage Equality

April 18, 2013 in Dating, Family, Gender, Health, Human Rights, Marriage, Mental Health, News, People, Politics, Relationships, Sexuality

I’m sure you would know by now New Zealand has voted in favour of marriage equality, winning at 77 to 44. If you haven’t already heard about this, you can read all the details here, but I had to share this news with you even if you already know, purely because I am just so excited and so proud of the country my father is from. Well done New Zealand! I can’t explain how much this news has meant to me. Equality is something I am incredibly passionate about, whether it be discrimination based on race, gender, on gender identity, [...]

October 20, 2012 in Current Affairs, Human Rights, Marriage, News, People, Politics, Religion, Sexuality, Society

We don’t normally post on the weekend but I decided to make an exception to share with you this stunning speech by a Missouri Pastor against equal marriage rights… Watch for the twist. Stand on the right side of history.

Same-Sex Marriage: Our Parliament Is Not Listening

September 21, 2012 in Current Affairs, Marriage, News, People, Politics, Relationships, Sexuality, Society

Earlier this year Galaxy published a poll indicating that 62% of people – almost two-thirds of Australians – support same-sex marriage. These results were consistent with previous polls. There is no doubt that the majority of Australians support same-sex marriage. Despite this, a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage was defeated Wednesday in the House of Representatives at 98 votes to 42. Those 42 votes only represent 28% of the parliament. How can 62% of Australians support same-sex marriage, and yet only 28% of our representatives support it? Something is very wrong with our Parliament. Of course, the fact that the Coalition were not allowed [...]

Awkward Conversations: How Do You Handle Them?

September 12, 2012 in Current Affairs, Human Rights, News, People, Politics, Religion, Self, Sexuality, Society

This week I got caught in the centre of a rather odd conversation with someone I had only just met. The conversation was about transsexuals and when these topics are brought up I am usually completely caught off guard. I can be opinionated when I write and with my closest friends but sometimes when I’m face to face with someone who is uncomfortable with anything opposing heterosexuality; I shut down. I don’t feel the need to fight for sexuality or to challenge people’s beliefs but after I walked away from this conversation I felt bereft as I had missed an opportunity [...]

Do What You Will, But Harm None.

September 3, 2012 in Books, Entertainment, People, Religion, Self, Sexuality, Society

“Do what you will, but harm none” is such a clear and powerful statement. Each of us should be free to live the way we like, so long as our actions do no harm. I first came across the term “Do what you will, but harm none” in the

“I Don’t Want To Be Gay Anymore”

August 3, 2012 in Celebrity, Current Affairs, Gender, Health, Human Rights, Marriage, Mental Health, News, People, Politics, Relationships, Religion, Self, Sexuality, Society, Sport

“I don’t want to be gay anymore”. This is just one of the thoughts that has gone through my mind lately, not that I have a choice of course. I have been confronted with my sexuality head on. I’m “out” to some and I’m not “out” to others and it’s tiring. It’s tiring living with one foot in the closet and one foot out. When I came out to my parents, my family and friends over ten years ago I felt a sense of relief. I was being true to myself – I’m bisexual and I don’t care who gives [...]

6 Reasons Christians Should Support Marriage Equality

July 20, 2012 in Human Rights, Lifestyle, Marriage, News, People, Relationships, Religion, Sexuality, Society

I am a practising Christian, I have listened to the arguments for and against marriage equality mostly in silence, not wanting to express my opinion until it was completely formed. It has been a long time since I decided I was definitely for marriage equality. but it took me a while before I could properly articulate why. I have now done so, and have narrowed it down to six points. Six points of why I believe Christians should support marriage equality. This is not a theological debate on what the Bible says about homosexuality, I believe that whether homosexuality is [...]

When Tragedy Strikes, and You Have No Rights

May 14, 2012 in Current Affairs, Human Rights, News, Politics, Sexuality

What if tragedy struck the one you loved? And what if, when it did, you had no legal rights? No right to know what happened, no right to attend the funeral, to take the body, to bury it where you saw fit. No rights to make decisions, no rights to their belongings. No rights at all. This happens, you know, it happens to same sex couples because they are not legally recognised to have the same rights as opposite sex couples. This is why marriage equality is a must. This is why we have to step up to the plate. [...]

Love at Halftime

May 10, 2012 in Dating, Marriage, People, Relationships, Sexuality

If you’ve been here before, you should know we are passionate advocates for marriage equality, and I simply can’t help myself with sharing this video that was brought to my attention by Detachable Princess, who knows these women by reputation. This video is a beautiful proposal that, for me, is one of the best arguments anyone can make for marriage equality. This is not an issue that is about religion, about what you believe about other people’s sexuality, whether or not you believe it to be a choice, to be a failing of any kind. This is an issue that [...]

Love Knows No Gender: The Bisexual Myth

May 4, 2012 in Dating, People, Relationships, Self, Sex, Sexuality, Society

When you think of bisexuals what are the first things that come to your mind? Is it that promiscuous, attention whore that kissed some girl in front of a group of guys? Or is it Katy Perry’s infamous “I kissed a girl (and I liked it)”? Charlotte York from SATC once said “I’m very into labels; gay, straight, pick a side and stay there”. For one of the most sexually innovative shows of its generation that line shows the ignorance that seems to be embedded in our society. People don’t take you seriously. I should know. I came out to my family [...]
