Movie Review: Star Trek Into Darkness

May 20, 2013 in Entertainment, Featured, Film & TV

On Thursday 9th May, Star Trek Into Darkness opened in theatres in Australia. Being the mega super Trekkie that I am, I absolutely had to see this on opening night. I’ve been waiting for this movie since the first one in this series, “Star Trek” came out in 2009. That movie was amazing, and JJ Abrams did really well to not piss off the hardcore Trekkies with his take on the Star Trek Universe. Of course that movie left it open for many more sequels, just like the original series. And I really really love the first Star Trek, and [...]

What Do You Do to Relax?

May 8, 2013 in Books, Entertainment, Film & TV, Health, Lifestyle, Mental Health

What sort of stuff do you do when you need to relax? As I was pulling together my thoughts for this article I started thinking about things I do in my spare time or what I do for fun, but they’re not exactly the same thing, are they? In my spare time I might do housework (not relaxing for me) or go on social media (which is fun, but not relaxing). I find playing Dungeons & Dragons great fun, but not relaxing, as it’s a fairly intense creative experience. So what I’m asking is not what you do for fun, [...]

Movie Review: Iron Man 3

April 29, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV

Like every other geek in the world, I’ve been looking forward to Iron Man 3 since 2012’s The Avengers. Well, if I’m honest, I’ve been looking forward to the next instalment of Iron Man since I first heard of him in 2008. You get the idea that the now-sober Robert Downey Jnr puts a lot of himself into hard-living genius millionaire Tony Stark and he’s great fun. One of Downey’s first comeback movies was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005, directed by Shane Black, who helms Iron Man 3. It was snarky, funny, and what is now called meta, a Hollywood piss-take starring a couple [...]

Young, Famous, Rich…and Happy?

April 16, 2013 in Body Image, Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV, Gender, Health, Lifestyle, Mental Health, Music, Work

As a little girl I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a singer, a rock star. I’d have loads of cash, I’d help out those I loved, it would be glamorous and life would be easy. It turns out the path to achieving fame and success at a young age seems to have a nasty aftertaste. The teenage years are awkward for everyone. I’d hate to have mine played out in the public eye, being scrutinized and torn apart by the media and lurking paparazzi. Maybe that’s what has sent so many young ‘starlets’ over the edge. Possibly [...]

And Now For The Good News

April 10, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV, Lifestyle, News, People, Self, Society, Technology

Ever since childhood I’ve hated watching the news. I would daydream or leave the room if my parents insisted on watching the news at home, consistent in my attempt to avoid knowing what was going on in the world. Why? Because they only ever report the bad. With the exception of the token “good news story” of the dog riding a surfboard, or what’s happening in Hollywood, the news is primarily about the important things that happen in the world, and this seems to be predominantly the bad. North Korea’s latest threats, the death of public figures, murder, accidents, robberies, the [...]

Chick Flicks Are Predictable – So What?

February 22, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV, People, Self

Last weekend, DG and I had a date night which involved dinner and a movie. Classic combination, right? We ended up seeing Safe Haven, the new Nicholas Sparks movie. For the people who know me, this will come as no surprise because I love Nicholas Sparks. He’s my favourite author (alongside JK Rowling and John Green) and I own every single one of his books and the DVDs of the movie adaptations (including two copies of The Notebook, one is a special edition and I HAD to have it). Why do I like him so much? Because his stories are “safe”. I generally [...]

My Favourite Podcasts

February 21, 2013 in Books, Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV, Stories, Technology

When travelling on public transport now it’s common to see more people with headphones than without. While I’m sure most are listening to their favourite tunes, I suspect a few, like me, would be indulging in podcasts. For those who are not familiar, a podcast is generally a series audio or video files you subscribe to and can download to a mobile phone, tablet, iPod or computer. You can find a podcast on almost topic and many TV and radio programs now release their show as a podcast. Since discovering them I have become addicted. I probably listen to podcasts [...]

“Not For Skinny Bitches” is NOT a Body Love Message

February 18, 2013 in Body Image, Film & TV, Health, Mental Health

I’m pretty angry right now, guys. I’m angry because Rebel Wilson (who I think is pretty funny, just for the record) has released a line of “Fat Mandi” T-shirts that are being promoted as “Not for skinny bitches”. This has annoyed a few people with Brisbane Times reporting it is sending mixed messages as the “Not for skinny bitches” line of clothing sends a body love message that is directly against her relationship with Jenny Craig. This makes me angry. Why? Because “not for skinny bitches” is not a body love message!! It is body shaming bullshit strutting around as a [...]

Sméagol And Gollum: The Two JJs

February 14, 2013 in Books, Film & TV, Friendship, People, Relationships, Self, Society

I’d like to introduce you to my two selves: Sméagol-JJ and Gollum-JJ. Sméagol-JJ is probably the JJ you guys are most familiar with. He’s the bloke who writes fun web-serials like Dumped! and The Last Slice. He’s the bloke who makes funny comments and teases people. He’s charming and witty and friendly – he’s the bloke who’s writing this post. Maybe some of you would like to meet him, or even be friends with him. He’s the bloke you want to follow on Twitter. But there’s another JJ - Gollum-JJ.  He’s the bloke who writes those angry rants on KK&T. The bloke who sometimes makes sarcastic comments, or disagrees with [...]

Just Bake The F***ing Cupcakes (Possibly NSFW)

February 8, 2013 in Children, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Film & TV, News, Parenting, Politics

Today’s guest post by An Idle Dad: This post carries a language warning and is possibly not safe for work due to language Here we go again. People get to tut and um about ‘fun police’ or in this specific case ‘cupcake police’. People get to mutter darkly about the nanny state. They’ll nod to each other and say “Political correctness gone mad”. Well, those people are cunts. Cunts with nothing better to do. There are far more greater things to worry about than some advice tucked away in some guidelines on how to reduce the incidents of germs spreading [...]
