Style: Monique’s SAG Awards Fashion Picks

Another awards show, another winning red carpet. One of the things I find the most interesting about these events is how my opinion of someones fashion sense can change so quickly. Some of the girls who were on my “didn’t love” lists were now on the “loved” side of things. The 19th Annual SAG Awards brought out some amazing looks, with black and navy the main colours of the night (though not many make an appearance on this list). There were so many looks that I LOVED, so I didn’t bother with the honourable/dishonourable mentions this time. Click here for a full list of winners (remember, it’s not just about the fashion).

1. Jessica Chastain

She was on my “didn’t love” list last red carpet, but Jessica Chastain stuns in this gorgeous red Alexander McQueen creation and looks like Jessica Rabbit at the same time. Her hair, the accessories, the cut of the dress. I cannot fault this outfit. Adored! Redhead wearing red works!

2. Naomi Watts

Doesn’t she look like a gorgeous, glittering statue? Did I mention last time that I liked glitter? While I was upset that Naomi didn’t take home the “actor”, she looked like a star in this beautiful Marchesa gown with delicate embroidery work.

3. Jennifer Lawrence

She has pneumonia and she still looks incredible. It may be because I have a massive girl crush on her but Jennifer (aka JLaw) just blew me away in this mermaid-cut Christian Dior gown. The girl can pull off navy, while bringing home the coveted statue! Who said strapless isn’t flattering?

4. Jennifer Garner

I don’t know if it’s the smile or the glitter, but doesn’t Jennifer look absolutely radiant? The gold lace sequinned Oscar de la Renta creation looked amazing on her and she just had the perfect accessories. She is, quite simply, dazzling.

Didn’t love…

1. Naya Rivera

I just didn’t like this. I think Naya has an amazing figure, one that should be shown off, but this black Donna Karan Atelier silk and satin gown just didn’t do it for me. The cleavage, the netting, the strange bodice. It was a fashion risk but I don’t think it paid off.

2. Julianne Moore

When Julianne Moore walked on the stage to present an award, I literally gasped. This Chanel Haute Couture just wasn’t the right pick (or fit) for her. While I like the navy flower appliqués and the mermaid hemline, that neckline was just, no. Was not flattering and looked really unfitted.

3. Julianna Margulies

It might have been the hair. Or the slit. Or the colour blocking. Or the shoes. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I just didn’t rate this look on Julianna at all. While I normally find her a safe red carpet best dressed, in this Chado Ralph Rucci dress, I was a little underwhelmed.

4. Rose Byrne

Rose is a hot, young thing, but in this Valentino, pastel, ruffled gown, she certainly didn’t look it. The pastel colours washed her out and made her look much older than her years. It almost (and I say almost) looked like she borrowed the dress from her grandmother’s wardrobe.

What did you think? Agree with me? Who were your favourites?

  • Hayley Ashman

I LOVED Rose Byrne’s gown. I’m partial to a flowy, girly dress.

    • Monique Fischle

See, I love flowy, girly dresses but I just think she could have done better.

    • Melissa Savage

Me too! I love a print on the red carpet!

  • Tamsin Howse

Oh that dress doesn’t fit Julianne Moore at all!

Love your picks, and completely agree on Jennifer Garner. I’m 50/50 on Rose Byrne’s floral number.

    • Monique Fischle

When she went up to receive an award, pretty sure there was a bit of a slip.

With Rose, I’m just not sold. Didn’t hate it, definitely didn’t love it.

      • Maree Talidu

Jen Garner ALWAYS. She is always polished and relaxed, she’s a pro. Naomi looks absolutely ethereal and Jennifer Lawrence did what I thought couldn’t be done: she OWNED navy. I like Rose Byrne’s dress, just not sure it’s the right dress for the occasion.

  • Melissa Savage

I was so tired by the time I looked at the dresses last night (spent my long weekend pulling together a 3000-word economics assignment) that I didn’t have the energy to criticise anyone. I just thought they were all beautiful and sparkly. Although there were a couple of ‘holy sideboob Batman!’ moments.

I think Jennifer Garner looks great too, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I think it’s because she just seems so happy and relaxed and like deciding what to do for a red carpet was the least important thing she had to do that day.

    • Sonja van Woerkom

For me, Jennifer Garner looks great because she’s a) really happy and b) you can see a bit of a tummy shape (you know, after having…3? kids!)and c) GLITTER :)
