Film Review: 21 Jump Street

Recently I went to see 21 Jump Street. I have to admit I did not know what to expect. Being too young at the time, I had never seen the original series, but as a Johnny Depp fan I had heard of it. In recent years I haven’t been to the movies very much and I’ve all but given up commercial TV so I hadn’t seen a preview or know a single thing about the storyline.

The movie opens in a high school scene with a very Eminemified Jonah Hill and an 80s jock-looking Channing Tatum. Although my first thought was “Oh dear, is this a high school movie starring 30 year olds?” I soon realised that would not be the case.

21 Jump Street is a buddy cop film in the style of Bad Boys, with a dash of Super Troopers and a fairly decent slosh of Hot Fuzz for good measure. Like the Cornetto Trilogy, 21 Jump Street is a bromance, a story of two men who are best friends and who learn to put their friendship above all overs.

With some hilarious scenes, causing me to have a full on snort laughing fit in the middle of a cinema (and be stared at by a number of more refined patrons) this film is one of the best I have seen in a while.

A cameo from Johnny Depp cements his support for the project, and a line about how there are no new ideas, only stolen and rehashed ones, sets up the tone for a fun and silly joy ride.

Overall I would recommend 21 Jump St, as long as you don’t mind a bit of gore, a lot of swearing, some drug use and a whole lot of dirty jokes.

A definite must see from me.

Have you seen 21 Jump St? What did you think? Did it compare to the original?

    I can’t wait to see 21 Jump Street. I too missed the original but from the ads I’ve seen it looks fantastic. I am glad you enjoyed it!

    Wow that sounds nothing like the original 21 Jump Street. It was very serious and covered stuff like drug abuse etc.

    It was kind of a cross between Degrassi and Law and Order.

      Wow! OK, this is NOTHING like that. At all. It’s totally silly. It does involve drugs, but not in a serious manner.

    When I saw the ad for this new movie I was all, “Oh no they didn’t!!” You see, 15 year old me was in love with 21 Jumpstreet, and IN LOVE with Johnny Depp and Richard Grieco. Watching 21 Jumpstreet on a Saturday night was a ritual. Later Grieco got his own spinoff show called Booker which aired immediately after Jumpstreet. I digress…

    In the last few years Hot Fuzz made it to my top ten list of favourite movies of all time and I may just be a little in love with Simon Pegg. But now you tell me that this new Jumpstreet a little influence from Hot Fuzz and my ovaries just exploded.

    Mind = blown.

      You will love it!
