Style: Monique’s SAG Awards Fashion Picks 2015

SAG featured

It feels like just yesterday we were discussing our favourite looks from the Golden Globes and here we are again dissecting the fashion choices from the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards red carpet. Held on Sunday 25 January 2014 (LA/USA time) at The Shrine Auditorium in LA, you can find a full list of winners here though there weren’t really many surprises. I had a really hard time picking my favourites and an even harder time picking my not-so-favourites (and the ones I did pick were more due to personal style preference). For the most part, everyone was looking great. So if there is someone you think should have been on the loved list and wasn’t, you can almost guarantee I loved it too, there just wasn’t enough room!

Loved

1. Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita brought it back this red carpet and brought it back hard! I LOVED Lupita’s look. This Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2015 long sleeved gown was just perfect. The bold and colourful print, the plunging yet tasteful neckline and the fit-and-flare feel were complimented by a red lip and a beautifully styled braided up-do. I’m not sure many people could have pulled off this look but Lupita did. Well done!

2. Tatiana Maslany

Tatiana, who was nominated for her role in Orphan Black, was not someone I was overly familiar with. After seeing her in this Oscar de la Renta gown, I will be keeping my eye out for her on the red carpet. I really liked this dress. The black and white colour palette stood out against the red carpet. I loved the asymmetrical shape of the bottom of the dress which took the gown to the next level and the simple yet classic ponytail and diamond ear cuff were the perfect accessories.

3. Camila Alves

Before we get started, can we just stop and take a moment to talk about Camila’s eyebrows? In the least weird way possible, those are some of the best shaped eyebrows I’ve ever seen! Back to the fashion: there may be no smile to accompany this gorgeous aubergine Donna Karan Atelier gown, but Camila is looking fierce. I love the way the fabric hugs her figure and the minimalistic styling of her hair and accessories. She knows how to rock a red carpet.

4. Naomi Watts

I love the sophisticated style of this navy Balenciaga gown. The silhouette is gorgeous and fits Naomi beautifully, I even appreciate the flare. I have always been a fan of the “off-the-shoulder” look and the textured black detailing helped to turn this dress into a winner. The diamond earrings and lightly tousled curls completed the classic look.

5. Reese Witherspoon

Would you just look at Reese! What an absolute star! White can be a very hard colour to pull off on the red carpet, especially without looking bridal, and Reese nailed it in this Giorgio Armani one-shoulder gown. I love the slight detailing on the capped sleeve and the neckline. The chic ponytail and the bright lip finished the look perfectly.

Honourable mentions to: Amy Poehler, Kaley Cucuo-Sweeting, Laura Carmichael, Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Joanne Froggatt, Uzo Aduba, Viola Davis, Sarah Hyland, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ariel Winter and Felicity Jones.

Didn’t Love

1. Claire Danes

This khaki Marc Jacobs gown isn’t necessarily bad, but I feel like there are far too many elements going on with this dress that distract from Claire’s gorgeous face (her hair and makeup were well done). The key-hole opening in the centre, the belt, the twist-top halter neck and the graphic print/beading down the side were a bit too much for my liking.

2. Sophia Bush

I hate having to put Sophia on this list (especially after she knocked it out of the park at Entertainment Weekly’s SAG party honouring the nominees the night before) but this Vivienne Westwood look didn’t quite work. I actually don’t mind the colour of the gown, but the way it weirdly hugs her waist and falls isn’t working. The accessories seemed a bit of an odd choice and the colour of the eye makeup wasn’t the right choice for the colour of the dress.

3. Natalie Dormer

Again, this Naeem Khan Spring 2015 dress isn’t bad, but I don’t feel like it suits Natalie. It’s a bit too much floral, the skirt seems too long for her and the beachy waves she’s got going on in her hair don’t seem to match the rest of the look. What did you think?

I’d love to hear what you all thought of the fashion choices on the red carpet! Who were your favourites? Which fashion picks do you think missed the mark?

Just a kind reminder: no nastiness please. Celebrities are still people so you can critique their fashion choices, but don’t be nasty about it.

Lupita Nyong’o – WOW! She looks absolutely stunning and perfect in every possible way. The dress suits her brilliantly. Claire Danes and Sophia Bush – I love the colours of their gowns but the styles are just a bit off. However in my eyes, Natalie Dormer can do no wrong, she is my girl crush. :)

      • Monique Fischle

I know, right? She has such good fashion sense!! I love the colours of the gowns also, it’s a shame they missed the mark just a bit. As I said, I really struggled to choose looks I didn’t like and with Natalie Dormer, I like the dress and I like her but I don’t think they go well together!
