Today’s Tip: How to make the perfect vegan breakfast smoothie
I am a vegetarian, not a vegan, and I will eat eggs and butter, particularly if they are cooked into something, but I don’t drink milk, eat yoghurt, ice cream or custard, etc. as my sinuses HATE dairy and convert it into yucky mucus within 15 minutes of eating it.
When you have a breakfast smoothie, you want it to be creamy. And that’s totally achievable without dairy products. I have made modifications and varied ingredients, but have now finally concocted what I believe is an amazing breakfast smoothie, packed full of all the essential nutrients that you need, plus antioxidants. Being low G.I means you stay fuller for longer as well. I use a ‘Magic Bullet’ to blend my ingredients, but you can use a stick blender, or a regular blender.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups frozen raspberries (I sometimes swap blueberries instead as they pack an antioxidant punch)
- 2 small bananas (the riper, the better)
- 200 mls unsweetened almond milk
- 1/2 tsp of powdered cinnamon
- 1 tsp of ‘Nature’s Way’ Super greens (a powder, found in health food aisle- each teaspoon has the equivalent of 10 serves of veggies)
Method
Combine ingredients and blend until smooth.
TIP: Using frozen berries makes it feel like your having a sneaky thick shake, except this is one ‘thick shake’ that is actually good for you! Guilt free. You can use frozen mixed berries, frozen peach slices, frozen mango- whatever your favourite (non citrus) fruit is, throw it in with the bananas and you have yourself a sugar free, dairy free, gluten free balanced breakfast that will keep you full and tastes delicious! (Just make sure that after you’ve eaten/drunk your smoothie that you brush your teeth thoroughly. There will be seeds etc. from the berries that can look most unattractive if left unattended!)
