I don’t know what it is about Bigfoot that has always captured my imagination, but the obsession has gone back as far as I can remember it. From being read stories about Edmund Hillary in the Boy’s Book of Exploration by my dad as a little kid, to renting every video I could get my hands on that related in some way to the yeti (my favourite of these was aptly named Bigfoot and is lesser known than it’s Henderson loving cousin), to watching Unsolved Mysteries hoping that one day they would do another Bigfoot episode, and show me something new, to last week when I insisted the Viking & I watch The Bigfoot Files when it aired on TV (the second episode airs tonight, just try and stop me!).
All the way across America last year I was staring out my window at the trees. I said I was looking for bears, moose, elk or squirrels, but I wasn’t – I was looking for Bigfoot.
There’s something about the idea of a secret species that has always captured my imagination. I also love fairies, the Loch Ness Monster, and many others like the chupacabra and the jersey devil. Something magical about the idea of a species existing outside of time, hiding in plain sight and managing to outwit us all.
I think part of me wants to believe there is something out there yet to be discovered. Part of me knows there is no bigfoot but another, larger, part still chooses to believe there is. Do you believe in Bigfoot? Yeti? Sasquatch? Aliens? Do you think those who do are crazy?
