Just A Little Bit Shit

Do you ever feel just a little bit shit? Right now, I am feeling just a little bit shit at everything car related.

So I was on my way home from a restaurant with a car full of girlfriends, where I’d decided I was too lost to navigate so one of my friends was driving. We’re somewhere in the back roads of god-knows-where when a cop car’s lights start flashing. Being good citizens we pull over and the officer approaches the driver’s window. At which point we are all thinking it’s a random breath test.

No.

Turns out we were driving an unregistered car! I have only recently bought the car so didn’t actually get a notice in the mail and had absolutely no idea.

So my friend gets slapped with a fine, we get told we’re not allowed to drive home, and I feel like the biggest douche nugget ever to walk the face of the earth.

Thankfully the policeman was pretty lenient and the episode only cost me (no way was my friend paying it) $607. Apparently he could gave fined me another $607 for letting someone drive my unregistered vehicle.

So, with my wallet a little lighter and my pride suitably damaged, I drove myself home. Spending the whole time nearly pissing myself thinking I was going to get done twice in the one day.

Once I got home I thought I’d best put some oil in the other car so the Viking could drive to work the next day, so off I trek to Kmart. I buy 5L of oil and, before even leaving the carpark, put it in my car.

Those of you who are experienced will notice my error.

During the (very short) drive from Kmart to my house I realised the car was blowing smoke. A couple of frantic side-of-the-road calls to my brother (mechanic) later, I was informed I had put too much oil in the car.

Oops

So then, feeling very sorry for myself, I donned my dirtiest dacks and hopped under the car to try to drain some of the oil out, the Viking still bedridden with the world’s nastiest cold and my brother on the phone.

A few tries later it was obvious I wasn’t going to be able to get the nut open.

I called the NRMA.

Once the technician arrived and I, red-faced and looking particularly pathetic, explained what had happened, he gave it a go.

No dice.

So here I am, sitting waiting for the tow truck to take away one car. The other car trapped in the garage until we can get it registered. And feeling, let’s face it, just a little bit shit.

Have you ever felt a little bit shit? Have you ever stuffed up your car?

Wow – you had a bad car day. I cracked a big chunk of windscreen out of our car yesterday trying to replace the rear view mirror. Fortunately insurance is covering the $770 I though I was going to be out of pocket, but still was the worst feeling imaginable when it happened.

      With no excess? You’re lucky!!

DAMN lucky! And yep, no excess, I have no idea why, but am so glad for it!

Your day sucked for sure, you do realise that the rego papers should have been dealt with at the time of sale/purchase? The onus is on the owner of the car to know whether they are registered or not. Valiant effort with the oil change though.

I transferred the ownership as was required, but didn’t note the date the rego expired and didn’t receive a notice.

Again, it’s your responsibility to be aware of how much rego your car has, it’s one of the major things you look at when purchasing a vehicle. I don’t mean to be difficult, but the rego is on you. Having said that, I don’t know if this was a second hand/dealer/brand new car. You managed to turn a crappy day into a funny read. I enjoyed your post.
