Richard Donner has announced The Goonies is finally having a sequel and hopefully with most of the original cast.
Hey, you guys!
Can you believe it? A sequel? To be honest my first reactions to this news were mixed and I just don’t know where to go from this. I don’t know which way is up or whether or not it’s Tuesday (it is Tuesday, right?). I’m completely ambivalent about this whole idea. Could a sequel recapture the magic of the original? Would it be a re-imagining like the recent 21 Jump Street? Or would they be ruining what is really a perfect film? Would the cast return in their original roles, or would they be cast only in cameos? Will Sean Astin have lost the weight he gained before Lord of the Rings and return to the guy I had a crush on in Encino Man? I have so many questions!
Like so many of my generation I grew up with The Goonies and all the other amazing cult classics that were around at the time: The Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Legend, Ladyhawke, Willow… So many more. And part of me is really hoping to recapture the wonder of that first moment the Goonies slide out of the caves into the water and look up to find the pirate ship, while at the same time I’m terrified they are going to ruin it for me.
Do we even need a sequel?
Kids are still watching the original to this day, even if it might be a bit scarier than we all remember it being (although, if you ask me, someone’s soul being sucked out of their eyes is pretty terrifying, even if they are a puppet, Jim Hensen). Would a sequel stop the new generation being able to appreciate the original for what it is when compared to today’s high tech effects and dumbed down storylines? We all saw what happened with Star Wars.
I just don’t know how to feel about this. What next, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Two?
What do you think? Are you excited about a Goonies sequel?
