Our time on the red carpet for awards season has come to a close. Sad times. The 86th Academy Awards, more affectionately known as the Oscars, was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday 2nd March 2014 (LA/USA time). You can find a full list of winners here. The Oscars is usually the time to step it up a notch in the fashion stakes. While there were some really lovely looks on the red carpet, I felt that most people were playing it too safe which was a bit disappointing. You’ll find that I haven’t picked bold colours in my ‘loved’ choices. Unfortunately, there weren’t many and the ones that were, weren’t my favourite. There weren’t really any terrible fashion choices, only a few questionable ones.
Loved
1. Lupita Nyong’o
Is it any surprise that she’s on my ‘loved’ list? I have the biggest style crush on Lupita. She is just flawless. This custom light-blue silk georgette soleil pleated Prada gown was a winner. The plunging neckline, the low sides, the crystal beading on the pleats, the Fred Leighton jewels. It all just worked together so well. She is my hands-down favourite of the night.
2. Kate Hudson
Kate was a 10 for me tonight. She hit the mark perfectly in this Atelier Versace gown. She’s no stranger to wearing white on the red carpet and I can see why she continues to go back to white, she simply dazzles in it. I love the train, the detail in the waist and the plunging neck line is tasteful. I like this look with or without the cape. The hair and makeup suited the look perfectly. Simply stunning.
3. Jenna Dewan-Tatum
Jenna is glowing. She looks gorgeous in this nude Reem Acra gown. She’s just one of many who were wearing nude somewhat bridal inspired gowns and as a soon-to-be-bride, I love it. I love all the elements, the tulle, the beading, the ruffles! To accessorise her beautiful outfit, Jenna wore jewels by Lorraine Schwartz. I wasn’t overly in love with her hair, but the rest of her ensemble was great.
4. Camila Alves
The cape look has been making regular appearances on the red carpet this season and Camila is another example of the cape looking good. Camila always looks gorgeous and this long-sleeved Gabriela Cadena gown looked fantastic on her. The creamy colour, the flow of the fabric and the Lorraine Schwartz earrings. She looked so elegant and radiant. Her husband, Matthew McConaughey, wasn’t the only winner in the family for the night.
I have to give a shout-out to Sandra Bullock, Pink, Julia Roberts, Penelope Cruz, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Garner, Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence (the gown, not the hairstyle), Angelina Jolie, Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Kristen Bell, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey, Joseph Gordon Levitt (pretty much most of the men there, except Pharrell, what was with the shorts on the red carpet buddy?)
Didn’t Love
1. Liza Minnelli
Oh Liza, what were you thinking? While I love the colour, and it popped on the red carpet amongst all the white/nude/silver hues, this Vintage Halston tunic and pants was a bit of a miss for me. Props to Liza for the fact that her hair matched her outfit but I was not a fan, what about you?
2. Anna Kendrick
This J. Mendel number on Anna Kendrick wasn’t terrible, but I wasn’t a huge fan either. The split up the leg, the sheer fabric around the waist and the one-shoulder-but-not-really top was just a bit all over the shop for me personally. Am I being overly picky or do any of you agree with me?
3. Viola Davis
I love Viola Davis and generally she looks fantastic on the red carpet but this Emerald green Escada gown is not the most flattering on her. The way the fabric clings to her mid-section hasn’t done her any favours. It’s such a shame that this dress wasn’t a winner as Viola is so beautiful, but I think she could have done better.
I’d love to hear what you all thought of the fashion choices on the red carpet! Who were your favourites? Which fashion picks do you think missed the mark?
Just a kind reminder: no nastiness please. Celebrities are still people so you can critique their fashion choices, but don’t be nasty about it.
