Silver fox knows best: Why we trust older men.

Lately it seems as though the news has been overrun by the US Republican Presidential Primaries. I can’t turn on SkyNews without being confronted by the figures of who won which state. Despite the fact that most of the candidates have unusual names (Mitt Romney, who’s first name is actually Willard, Rick Santorum, don’t Google his last name, and Newt Gingrich, sounds like the name of a character in fantasy fiction), I’ve been trying to figure out who I like the best.

I have decided on Mitt Romney. But let me be clear, this has nothing to do with his political standings, it is simply to do with the fact that I find him to be the most trustworthy. Why, I hear you ask? Well, it’s because he has grey hair just above his ears. Yes, you read that correctly.

I've always had a soft spot for Bryan Batt and his highlights.

I find Mitt the most trusting because he has dark hair, but grey hair just above his ears. And it’s not just Mitt. When going through Mad Men with my Dad, I noticed that one of my favourites, Salvatore Romano (Bryan Batt) also has dark hair with grey “highlights”. Despite the fact that he is incredibly bad at hiding his sexuality (how the other characters believe his is a straight man is beyond me), I also have a natural leaning towards Sal and find him one of the most trustworthy of the Mad Men characters. I also have a soft spot for Roger “Silver Fox” Sterling (John Slattery) because he has grey hair.

I spent a lot of time thinking about this and decided the reason I find these physical traits trustworthy is for the simple reason that they are honest. Mitt knows he’s getting older and instead of hiding it, lets his hair do it’s thing. And I like this. This is nothing against people who dye their hair, I’ve dyed mine more times than I can remember, but I like Mitt better with his grey ear warmers than I would if he dyed his whole head darker, just like I’m more likely to warm to a balding man than I would a man who has invested in hair plugs or a toupee.

This could all be because for the entire time I’ve been alive, my Dad hasn’t had hair on the top of his head and his remaining hair and Santa beard has been a combination of salt and pepper. As the most influential man in my life, his physical appearance was bound to mark indicators of what I find trustworthy (or alternatively untrustworthy) in a man.

As for the Republican candidates? Mitt all the way. Because of his hair. And Willard is an awesome name.

What about you? What physical traits do you find trustworthy in either men or women? Do you know why?

I am a silver fox…it’s just not that easy to see my grand silverness amongst my blondness…you’ll just have to trust me.

      😉

One day it will all be grey and you’ll look like a pseudo-intellectual with a grey ponytail! Will be a great day when that happens :)

Husband has dark blonde hair, with silver bits in his beard and at the tips of his ears.

I shall hide him from you. 😛

Haha don’t worry, I won’t attempt to steal your husband. It’s not so much that I find grey hair attractive, it’s that it usually is a sign of age and often maturity and wisdom.

So I’ll probably just find your husband trustworthy.

Then I suppose I can allow that.

I prefer older guys so a little bit of grey hair is sexy to me!

I don’t know if I find their age or hair colour particularly trustworthy, I just find their life experience much more appealing than say a guy my age.

      • Monique Fischle

I have (almost) always gone older. It might have something to do with the 14 year age gap between my parents, but I like it when the guy is older, generally means they are closer to my maturity level, though unfortunately, not always.

I think I find grey trustworthy as it shows they’ve had more life experience, hence I trust them a little more. But I’m not going to jump in a strangers van because he has grey hair, just so we’re clear 😛

You, on the other hand, I shall hide my husband from. Except that you’re coming over on Monday 😛

        • Rose Russo

          Beware!!

          Ha ha ha

      Two words for you.

      Mark. Harmon.

      • Monique Fischle

        Agreed.

And I can’t believe I forgot to mention the king of all Silver Foxes, George Clooney! I wish I was his next girlfriend!
