Poem: The Quiet Season

May 1, 2013 in Fiction, Stories

Trees cast dark silhouettes against a hazy pink sky —misty, even though it is late afternoon. The day has never recovered from the morning fog, which promises to shroud the city in its embrace yet again. A fog so thick it covered the suburban roofs like a polar fleece blanket, wrapping and tucking itself about the bare branches; its dampness filling the air making everything feel wet — an illusion of warmth and safety.   A plume of smoke trails from a chimney, blending into the fog; lost in the mist. The last yellow leaves cling to branches, they too, [...]

Fashion: My Plus Size Picks for Winter

April 24, 2013 in Fashion, Style

As the weather turns cooler, and the stores start their mid season sales, I bring to you my plus size fashion picks from ASOS Curve. I usually turn to ASOS this time of year, as they have their 70% off sale, and given that they’re in the UK, their cooler clothes are now in the sale. Score! ASOS has free shipping, and sizes in Curve range from 20-26. They have also started stocking Inspire items from UK store New Look, some of which goes up to 28 (which is awesome and I hope they keep doing it). Given that I’m [...]

It’s kind of S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

January 8, 2013 in Fitness, Health, Lifestyle, Mental Health, People, Self

Get the ‘blues’ in winter? Feel down, depressed, miserable? Most people don’t enjoy large parts of winter and struggle with the lack of sunshine, pleasant temperatures and colour that other seasons afford us. However, you may struggle more than the average person, and your ‘blues’ may not be limited to the season of winter. Seasonal Affective Disorder (also known as Seasonal Anxiety Disorder) is actually a mood disorder that can present as crippling depression and leave the sufferer feeling quite simply, ‘sad’, for no obvious reason. Although not recognized officially until the early 1980’s, Seasonal Affective Disorder has been studied [...]

How To Run The Perfect Winter’s Bath

July 19, 2012 in Body, Home, Lifestyle

There are two types of people in this world; those who like to bathe and those who like to shower. My partner R loves a shower, but hates a bath. I’m the opposite. I love to have baths, the longer the better… especially in winter. So here’s my guide to running the perfect winter’s bath. First of all, you need to be in the bath when running it. This is really important, so make sure you have everything you need close by before running the bath… soaps, a good book, rubber ducky… and make sure you have added your favourite [...]

5 Days of Fabulous Flats

June 28, 2012 in Fashion, Work

I love heels. Scrap that, I love shoes! All shoes except crocs and hideous walking shoes I had to buy for America trip. When I was at uni, I worked for a shoe company that owned five different shoe store chains. That equated to staff discount across all 5 chains. Unsurprisingly, I became a shoe addict. I now have 60 or so pairs of shoes nestled in the various wardrobes around my house. I’m very particular about my shoes. They must be staggeringly high (8-10cm +) or dead flat to the ground. No kitten heels, no mid-heels and no stubby [...]

Quirks, I Have a Few

May 31, 2012 in Health, Mental Health, People, Society

Sometimes, I am convinced that I have mild obsessive compulsive disorder. Quirks, I suppose you would call them, little flashes of paranoia. Everyone has them, some more so than others. I like to think I have mine totally under control! I have several. I can’t have the TV volume or any volume control on 13. Also, the volume control has to be on an even number or a number ending in 5. 15 is ok, 17 is not! In the mornings, when I watch TV, I usually eat my breakfast at about 7:00am in front of Sunrise (don’t judge!). Even [...]

Brighten Up Your Winter in a Coat

May 3, 2012 in Body, Fashion, Style

The thing I love about overseas clothing stores is that their sale section is full of clothes that are coming into season in Australia. I’m going to share with you my very affordable coat picks for winter from Asos Curve. Being in the sale section, all sizes won’t always be available, and they won’t be there forever. Warning: my picks will nearly all be colourful. I love colour, especially in winter when the skies are so dreary. A great light coat for flinging over clothes. Love the bright colour of the mac. Can be found here for $53.89. Sizes 22-26 available [...]

WeirdBeards: A beanie… for your face.

April 4, 2012 in Face, Fashion, Humour, Style

During one of my daily trolls on Etsy, I came across something rather unusual. It was a beanie. For your face. That looks like a beard. Called WeirdBeards: Handmade Face Cozy Warmer Wind Breaker. I’m not kidding. According to the seller Pam (who is from Missouri, US) “this is the hottest trend among kids, tweens, pre-pubescent manly-wanna-be’s, and bearded ladies.” She then goes onto suggest WeirdBeards as a great party favourite, “Be the first on your block to have to answer the question – Where in the world did you come up with that?” Really? THIS is the hottest trend? I’m [...]
