And Now For The Good News

April 10, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV, Lifestyle, News, People, Self, Society, Technology

Ever since childhood I’ve hated watching the news. I would daydream or leave the room if my parents insisted on watching the news at home, consistent in my attempt to avoid knowing what was going on in the world. Why? Because they only ever report the bad. With the exception of the token “good news story” of the dog riding a surfboard, or what’s happening in Hollywood, the news is primarily about the important things that happen in the world, and this seems to be predominantly the bad. North Korea’s latest threats, the death of public figures, murder, accidents, robberies, the [...]

Dear Australian TV, I am Leaving You

January 9, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV

Australian TV stations are the reason I just upgraded my internet. I am so tired of its programming games, I am just going to watch things over the internet. I don’t care if it’s fan fiction on vimeo, or new steampunk drama on youtube, or just the documentaries and ABC iView I can get free from my internet provider. As long as it’s not what you are doing now. Admittedly, it is not the ratings season, so we are not getting new episodes. But was it really necessary to go back to the Mid-Season, Series Finale tactic? You know, when [...]

Girls: Embracing the Average on TV

November 19, 2012 in Body, Body Image, Celebrity, Entertainment, Fiction, Film & TV

It’s no secret that the characters in TV shows rarely mirror people in real life. Sure, their personalities may have some similarities but it’s not often they match up to reality in the looks department. Then there’s Girls, the new hit show from HBO that appears to be embracing the average. The premise may sound a little familiar; four friends in their twenties try to make their way in New York as they deal with the typical dramas facing young women in the Big Apple. Some are calling it Sex and the City for a new generation, and while I [...]

Carefree Forced To Defend ‘Acti-Fresh’ Advert

July 17, 2012 in Body Image, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Film & TV, Gender, Health, News

Carefree have been forced to defend their latest advertisement for the product Acti-Fresh after the Advertising Standards Bureau received numerous complaints. NineMSN reports: Carefree has been forced to defend its new ad that shows a naked woman and uses the words “vaginal discharge”, saying it is a celebration of the female body. The Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) received complaints about the ad for Acti-Fresh liners as soon as it was launched last night. In the ad a naked young woman discusses vaginal discharge in a white room, her body artfully hidden behind a bunch of white flowers. The ad uses [...]

“Good Evening, And This Is The (Entertainment) News”

July 3, 2012 in Current Affairs, Entertainment, Film & TV, News

When I was a young boy, the evening news on the TV was in black and white. It was the only news bulletin shown each day. There weren’t even news headlines during the day. You just got half an hour of news each night, and that was it. Growing up in Sydney we mostly watched James Dibble read the news on the ABC, though I also remember occasionally watching Roger Climpson on 7 and Brain Henderson on 9. They all had one thing in common. They all read the news in an undramatic manner, and they read the news by reading from [...]

5 Vampire Shows You Can Get Your Teeth Into

June 29, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV

I love vampire shows. Mysterious brooding pretty guys, kick-ass heroines, supernatural stuff, witty banter, cool fighting - they have it all. I find dramatic situations much more interesting when the stakes aren’t just ending relationships, but the end of the world. Of course in vampire shows you frequently get both! Mysteries, love, relationships, beating evil (and all done in a sexy long trenchcoat). Here are my top 5 favourite vampire shows. Will your favourite be there? 5. Blood Ties This is a lesser known Canadian show, based on a series of books by Tanya Huff. These books were written in the [...]

What Ever Happened to Kids TV?

June 26, 2012 in Books, Children, Entertainment, Film & TV, Parenting

I need help. Over the last few days I have been subjected to the kind of rubbish TV that kids are provided these days. Baby voices putting W’s where they shouldn’t be, beads of sweat on foreheads and open mouthed questions of “Huh?” while making a facial expression that would make even Einstein look like an idiot. And if I have to hear one more bratty child speaking back to their parent with an “Ugh, they just don’t understand anything” tone I am going to stab someone with the remote. What happened to all the shows that actually teach children about [...]

Melbourne Earthquake Shakes Up Twitter

June 20, 2012 in Anecdotes, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Film & TV, Humour, Lifestyle, News, People, Pets, Stories, Technology

Last night at 8:53pm Melbourne was hit by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake. The ground shook, stock fell off shelves, cats played guitars, and Twitter went wild. Australia has a long history of reacting to drama with humour, it is our best defense. Last night’s earthquake (which prompted more than 30 calls for help however no reports of major damage or injuries) was no exception. It wasn’t long before everyone was having a laugh, even when Sunrise on 7 reported the story really seriously today they kept showing footage of a mannequin that had fallen over, and I couldn’t help but [...]

Did You Watch “Being Lara Bingle”?

June 13, 2012 in Celebrity, Film & TV

How much do you know about Lara Bingle? Did you watch her debut reality TV show, Being Lara Bingle, last night on Channel 10? Unless you’ve been avoiding free to air TV, Twitter, or living under a rock, you have probably heard of it. But the question on everyone’s lips: Did you watch it? What did you think? Here is the (very small) list of things I know about Lara Bingle: She was engaged to some cricket superstar called Michael Clarke; She became famous after appearing in those “where the bloody hell are you?” ads (which FYI , I thought [...]

Quirks, I Have a Few

May 31, 2012 in Health, Mental Health, People, Society

Sometimes, I am convinced that I have mild obsessive compulsive disorder. Quirks, I suppose you would call them, little flashes of paranoia. Everyone has them, some more so than others. I like to think I have mine totally under control! I have several. I can’t have the TV volume or any volume control on 13. Also, the volume control has to be on an even number or a number ending in 5. 15 is ok, 17 is not! In the mornings, when I watch TV, I usually eat my breakfast at about 7:00am in front of Sunrise (don’t judge!). Even [...]
