Young, Famous, Rich…and Happy?

As a little girl I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a singer, a rock star. I’d have loads of cash, I’d help out those I loved, it would be glamorous and life would be easy. It turns out the path to achieving fame and success at a young age seems to have a nasty aftertaste. The teenage years are awkward for everyone. The Lost Boys Of Australian Sport

March 22, 2013 in Current Affairs, Mental Health, Society, Sport

I’ve been thinking a lot about sport recently. That’s not unusual for me – I like watching sport, and I’ve written about the state of Australian cricket and the whole Homework-Gate thing on my personal blog. That whole shemozzle with the touring Australian cricket team in India – plus other sporting meltdowns, such as the Aussie swimmers, and the NRL players Rose mentioned in her recent post – have made me question the way we treat and manage our professional sports-people. This looks to be her last Olympic Games as she plans to retire from professional swimming following the 2012 London Games. This makes me a bit sad but we all know not to trust [...]

What is a role model? And why do we expect them to be perfect?

April 2, 2012 in Current Affairs, Society, Sport

Who do you consider to be role models? Your friends and family? The rich and famous? Artists? Sports people? And what is a role model anyway? It seems to me that the blogosphere and the media have become increasingly preoccupied with the notion of role models in recent years…who they are and how they should behave. Certainly the media is much more vocal about who they consider to be role models nowadays. What’s more, there seems to be an attitude in the media, and perhaps the general community, that certain groups of people have some sort of social obligation to [...]
