Abortion: I’m Pro-Choice And Pro-Life

February 11, 2013 in Current Affairs, Gender, Health, Human Rights, Lifestyle, Parenting, People, Pregnancy & Birth, Religion, Self, Sexuality, Society

I’m glad to see that there’s been some new discussions around the antiquated abortion laws in New South Wales and Queensland – about time! Whenever I see articles about abortion, it always makes me wonder what I would do if a sexual partner of mine became pregnant. Given my age, sex, and relationship status (middle-aged, male, and in a 20 year committed relationship) it’s unlikely that I will ever be confronted with this situation. But when people ask me if I am pro-choice or pro-life, I always reply “both”. “How can that be?” they will ask. Well, it all depends [...]

Married In Italy & Monique’s Celeb Top 5

October 26, 2012 in Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV, Marriage, Pregnancy & Birth, Wedding

When writing these introductions, I wish that I could type the way I speak in person but sadly,  it sometimes doesn’t come across that way. For instance, I want to start with “hey hey hey” but said with some attitude. Now if you don’t hear the attitude or the subtle nuances in my voice (yes, using big words here), it will just look like I’ve repeated myself. Sigh. I hope this will change one day. It’s been a fun week in H0llywood this week with some awesome videos and what has got to be my favourite wedding photo ever. Enjoy… [...]

When Conversation Takes a Turn for the Nasty

September 24, 2012 in Health, Lifestyle, People, Pregnancy & Birth, Self, Society

The other day I was having breakfast with my family, celebrating my mother’s safe return home after 10 weeks overseas for work, and the conversation turned to coffee enemas. No, I’m not sure how either, but it did, and unfortunately it was a conversation that just kept getting worse. From there we started talking about drop toilets, back to coffee enemas, over to the time my great grandfather was off to perform a baptism, dressed in all white, as you do, and had to stop at a drop toilet. Unfortunately he lost his footing, or seating, or whatever, and let’s [...]

Hello my friends and welcome to another week of Monique’s Celeb Top 5! Hope you have all had a lovely week and have lots of fun activities planned for the weekend. Genetic Testing: Sensible or Playing God?

August 23, 2012 in Current Affairs, Health, News, Parenting, Pregnancy & Birth

Genetic testing seems to be a taboo topic that no one really discusses and with good reason, like religion, parenting or politics, you can never be sure that you won’t be offending someone by your views. For couples trying to conceive through IVF who have a history of genetic defects, I completely understand that genetic testing is a must. For others, not so much. But recently, a medical ethicist has thrown a spanner in the works when he came out and said genetic testing is a moral obligation for parents. From The Verge: Oxford medical ethicist Julian Savulescu has called screening out [...]

Pregnant Teen Dies After Abortion Ban Delays Treatment

August 20, 2012 in Current Affairs, Health, Human Rights, News, Politics, Pregnancy & Birth

A pregnant 16-year-old in the Dominican Republic has died after being unable to receive chemotherapy due to an abortion ban. Doctors refused treatment for the teen’s leukaemia as the treatment could end the pregnancy, placing the life saving treatment in violation of the Domincan Constitution, which bans abortion. The doctors talked for several days fearing imprisonment and the loss of their medical licenses if administering the life saving treatment resulted in the death of the baby. At the time of her death, the girl, whose name has not been released, was 13 weeks pregnant and was admitted to hospital with [...]

Would You Bank Cord Blood?

August 8, 2012 in Celebrity, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Health, News, Parenting, Pregnancy & Birth

Giuliana and Bill Rancic have been in the celebrity-world news a lot lately as the birth of their baby via surrogate approaches (end of August/beginning of September). Their most recent headline-making news is that they are planning to donate Baby Rancic’s umbilical cord blood. Say what? According to Celebrity Baby Scoop: After suffering with infertility followed by a breast cancer diagnosis in 2011, Giuliana and her husband Bill made the decision to store their child’s cord blood. The couple was given their blood banking kit during their baby shower and Giuliana tweeted about their decision, mentioning her sister Monica who also did cord blood [...]

The Contraceptive Pill and Your Health

June 25, 2012 in Celebrity, Children, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Health, Mothers, News, Parenting, People, Pregnancy & Birth, Relationships, Sex, Society

Kim Kardashian’s mother put her on The Pill just before her 15th birthday. This is what the reality TV star told Oprah Winfrey last week. The public’s reaction to this news was overwhelming positive – “good on Kris for taking care of her daughter’s sexual health” and “better she’s on birth control than pregnant at 15″ was the general response. And I agree. The fact that Kim could approach her mother about her sexual health is a good lesson for us all. Mothers need to be realistic and their daughters need to feel comfortable enough to ask these questions. Although today’s [...]

Public Transport Etiquette

June 1, 2012 in People, Society, Travel, Work

Most people who live in large cities and commute to work in the CBD, would need to catch public transport. I work in the city and have to catch the bus to and from work each day. Being a regular user of public transport, I’m familiar with the etiquette or polite ‘rules’ of travelling on the bus. School children and students are not supposed to be sitting when a full fee paying adult is standing, and there are four seats with a little sign saying that if you sit there, you have to move for pregnant women, elderly people or [...]
