This Week: My Birthday

May 4, 2013 in Lifestyle, Self, Work

We haven’t caught up for two weeks so I’ve got a few photos to share with you today. The last two weeks have been fairly eventful and today is my birthday just in case my constant updates left you in any doubt. So be warned that next week will be all about my birthday, even though it’s actually today. The first big thing in the past two weeks has been JJ stepping back from blogging, which has had a huge impact on the site but as always I’m behind him 100% in what he wants to do and I can’t wait [...]

Tony Abbott: My Five Stages Of Grief

April 8, 2013 in Current Affairs, Humour, Politics

OK – let’s face it. Barring something unexpected, it’s almost certain that Tony Abbott will become the next Prime Minister of Australia. Some of you might be pleased with this, and I’m happy for you, but I can’t share your joy. I don’t always vote Labor, but I’ve never voted Liberal and nothing about Tony Abbott or the policies of the Coalition makes me want to change this. So, where does that leave me? I’m guessing you’ve all heard of the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. Well, I’m feeling that way about Tony Abbott. Denial It will be OK. Gillard [...]

Sexism in Australian Politics: Mike Tyson says NO

October 15, 2012 in Celebrity, Current Affairs, Entertainment, News, People, Politics, Sexuality, Society

After what has been an extraordinary couple of weeks with our country’s leaders slinging mud at every opportunity, I knew it would feature heavily in The Sunday Telegraph that I purchased this morning. I knew there would be feature articles and opinion pieces about Julia Gillard accusing Tony Abbott of misogyny and sexist behavior. Hey, her impassioned 15-minute speech went viral and saw women all over the world fist pumping for this female leader who dared to speak out against sexism in politics with such vitriol. What I didn’t expect was that the paper would interview Mike Tyson, who is [...]

Updated: Is Julia Gillard The Muhammad Ali Of Australian Politics?

October 10, 2012 in Current Affairs, News, Politics

In all the hullabaloo around the resignation of Peter Slipper as Speaker of Federal Parliament yesterday, you may have missed the story around Julia Gillard’s blistering attack on Tony Abbott. Strangely, it seems to have been getting more press overseas than in Australia. Here’s the video: If I was still in any doubt that Julia Gillard has been biding her time and waiting for the right moment to go on the attack, well yesterday’s performance has reinforced my opinion that Julia Gillard really is “The Muhammad Ali Of Australian Politics”. We’d love to hear what you think about her speech. Is she [...]

“I Don’t Want To Be Gay Anymore”

August 3, 2012 in Celebrity, Current Affairs, Gender, Health, Human Rights, Marriage, Mental Health, News, People, Politics, Relationships, Religion, Self, Sexuality, Society, Sport

“I don’t want to be gay anymore”. This is just one of the thoughts that has gone through my mind lately, not that I have a choice of course. I have been confronted with my sexuality head on. I’m “out” to some and I’m not “out” to others and it’s tiring. It’s tiring living with one foot in the closet and one foot out. When I came out to my parents, my family and friends over ten years ago I felt a sense of relief. I was being true to myself – I’m bisexual and I don’t care who gives [...]

Why Everyone Is Wrong About Craig Thomson

May 25, 2012 in Current Affairs, Politics

I suppose like many people, I’ve been watching this whole “Craig Thomson Saga” from the sidelines with a mixture of humour, frustration and indifference, usually all at the same time. The more it goes on, the more I think that everyone is in the wrong. Why Craig Thomson is wrong: Well, that’s pretty obvious. The evidence against him seems to be damning. Yes, I know – he’s yet to be charged with anything – but in normal circumstances he would have resigned by now. Not necessarily because of an “admission of guilt”, but at least to take the enormous pressure off himself. But these aren’t [...]

Love Knows No Gender: The Bisexual Myth

May 4, 2012 in Dating, People, Relationships, Self, Sex, Sexuality, Society

When you think of bisexuals what are the first things that come to your mind? Is it that promiscuous, attention whore that kissed some girl in front of a group of guys? Or is it Katy Perry’s infamous “I kissed a girl (and I liked it)”? Charlotte York from SATC once said “I’m very into labels; gay, straight, pick a side and stay there”. For one of the most sexually innovative shows of its generation that line shows the ignorance that seems to be embedded in our society. People don’t take you seriously. I should know. I came out to my family [...]

Should Drugs Be Legal? What do you think?

April 3, 2012 in Current Affairs, News, Politics

In the news today is Bob Carr’s call to decriminalise some drugs. This comes on the back of a report by the Australia21 think tank claiming the War on Drugs had been lost and the tough approach by the law was doing more harm than good. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said decriminalisation is not the answer but Carr, whose brother died of a heroin overdose in 1981, believes that the decriminalisation would allow police to focus their resources elsewhere. The logic behind decriminalising drugs is that making drugs legal and regulated will reduce drug related crime, reduce overdose and [...]

Germaine Greer has a big mouth. Just get over it!

March 21, 2012 in Current Affairs, News, Politics

You’ve probably seen and read all the kerfuffle about what Germaine Greer said on Monday night’s Q&A. In case you haven’t, here’s the clip: Basically, after an intelligent and measured observation about the quality of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister, Germaine finished off the statement with a fairly tactless (if accurate) description of the Prime Minister’s fashion sense, finishing with the line, “…you’ve got a big arse, Julia. Just get over it!” The twitterverse and blogosphere went crazy. How dare Germaine say that. What a disgrace! How can she claim to be a feminist after saying something like that? Well, twitterverse and blogosphere, [...]

Ruddy Hell

February 27, 2012 in Current Affairs, News, Politics

And so, five days after all this began, we are back to where we were. Julia Gillard is still Prime Minister, and Kevin Rudd is still the people’s favourite. Or are we? Think about it. Over the past five days Kevin Rudd’s support within his own party has not changed. He started five days ago with around 30 votes…he ended up today with 31 votes. Nothing he said to his colleagues made them change their minds about him. No amount of family support from his wife and daughter made any difference. No misguided people-power campaign made a single person switch [...]
