My Top 5 Board Games

May 14, 2013 in Entertainment, Lifestyle, Technology

For many years the phrase “board games” has immediately reverted me back to childhood with memories of Monopoly-fuelled rage and overturned games of Connect 4. The inevitable realisation that everyone you know is actually a complete twat, and no one ever gives you a break when you’re not as good at games as anyone else. OK, so maybe that was just me. The point is, I hated board games. With the exception of Canasta and Guess Who, I perpetually avoided playing games of any kind as I knew myself well enough to know I was bound to take it personally when [...]

I Love Organising Books

September 11, 2012 in Books, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Technology

Today’s guest post from Michelle Austin: I have a literary confession to make.  Not one of those I have five degrees, including a PhD, but still love to read Wendy Holden and Marion Keyes confessions (although that is actually true).  No – my confession is far more nerdy.  You see, while I do love reading books, I actually love organising them even more. Recently my book-arranging has reached dizzying new heights (or is that depths?) with the move away from my Excel spreadsheet and into Goodreads. Both my husband and I love books.  I love looking at books on the [...]

Eating Alone: Uncomfortable or Bliss?

July 31, 2012 in Entertainment, Food & Recipes, Lifestyle, Mental Health, People, Self, Technology

Eating alone can be quite confrontational, especially for those who are not secure in themselves or who do not enjoy their own company. There’s a lot of stigma to eating alone, the implication that there’s somehow something wrong with it. That it makes you a sad person who has no friends. I’ve been a victim of this way of thinking. On Sunday I had breakfast out on my own. It’s not something I’d normally do and while I went to the cafe we go to every week for breakfast as soon as I sat down they brought over two menus [...]

I’m Not a Phone Talker

May 1, 2012 in People, Self, Stories, Technology

Yes, I’m one of those people that don’t answer their phone. Well at least 90% of the time anyway. I can’t be counted on in an emergency. Just so you know. I’m terrible. It’s like I just freeze up as soon as my phone rings. ‘How dare they call me! Don’t they know it’s polite to text first?’ This probably sounds utterly ridiculous but hey, it’s just the way I am. I wasn’t always programmed this way. I could chew the ear off anyone who would listen to me. When my mum cut the home phone off after I ran [...]

12 Signs You’re Dating A Nerd

March 22, 2012 in Dating, Film & TV, Society

It was a few months into my brand new relationship when my boyfriend and his brother made a joke. It was a Sunday night, a group of friends were over (who have apparently been coming over every Sunday night since 1985) and everybody laughed. Except me. All of a sudden it dawned on me… Oh my God, I’m dating a nerd. In case you’re wondering if you are, I’ve put together this guide (with my handy dandy notebook) – 12 ways to tell if you’re dating a nerd. 1. You know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek Not [...]

There’s An App For That

February 27, 2012 in Lifestyle, Technology

Do you ever feel like all these things that have been invented to make our lives easier are taking over? I’m not talking about a Terminator the-robots-are-taking-over kind of way, although that’s possible too. Just this constant feeling that you should always be doing something more, clicking something, doing it faster, easier, better. Remember when you had to wait until school the next day to speak to your friends? When you had to sit through the movie wracking your brains to figure out where you had seen that guy before? Well, those days are gone. Now we can find out [...]

FoodSwitch App

February 16, 2012 in Food & Recipes, Nutrition, Technology

An iPhone application has been created to help consumers make informed choices about what they food in their mouths. The FoodSwitch app, created by health researcher The George Institute for Global Health and insurance company Bupa uses a barcode scanner to bring up traffic light information. Australian consumer watchdog Choice has been campaigning for the introduction of a “traffic light” labeling system since 2009 and although the government has been resistant to bring this in as legislation, it seems the idea has been grabbed with both hands and made into an application for iPhone uses, with Android versions to come.
