Don’t Call Me A Feminist

July 26, 2012 in Current Affairs, Gender, News, People, Society

Lot’s of people on social media proudly proclaiming themselves feminists at the moment. That’s cool. Lots of people claiming to be reclaiming the word Feminist. That’s cool too, although I don’t know how you can really make a claim to a word. Lot’s of men announcing that they are feminists too… that’s less cool with me – I just don’t really understand or agree with it. Some people are also expecting men to label themselves as feminist to show their support… that isn’t cool with me. Don’t tell me how to label myself, and I won’t try and label you. I [...]

Weighing in on “How to be a Woman” by Caitlin Moran

April 17, 2012 in Books, Gender

Until about 3 months ago, I had no idea who Caitlin Moran was. Then, over Christmas, there was a big love fest for her recent book “How to be a Woman” over Twitter and on Mamamia. I immediately reserved it from the library and decided it was a ‘must read’. As soon as I picked it up from the library, I started reading it, before reading the 20 or so other books that were due back earlier (I have an obsessive way of reading library books, they must be read in the order in which they are due back). Feminism Is Not A Dirty Word

How about no? I’ll pass. Out. To be perfectly honest I’ve become disillusioned Germaine especially after her antics on ABC’s Q&A program a few weeks ago. I feel she’s controversial just for the sake of a headline and it made [...]

Germaine Greer has a big mouth. Just get over it!

March 21, 2012 in Current Affairs, News, Politics

You’ve probably seen and read all the kerfuffle about what Germaine Greer said on Monday night’s Q&A. In case you haven’t, here’s the clip: Basically, after an intelligent and measured observation about the quality of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister, Germaine finished off the statement with a fairly tactless (if accurate) description of the Prime Minister’s fashion sense, finishing with the line, “…you’ve got a big arse, Julia. Just get over it!” The twitterverse and blogosphere went crazy. How dare Germaine say that. What a disgrace! How can she claim to be a feminist after saying something like that? Well, twitterverse and blogosphere, [...]
