Movie Review: Iron Man 3

April 29, 2013 in Entertainment, Film & TV

Like every other geek in the world, I’ve been looking forward to Iron Man 3 since 2012’s The Avengers. Well, if I’m honest, I’ve been looking forward to the next instalment of Iron Man since I first heard of him in 2008. You get the idea that the now-sober Robert Downey Jnr puts a lot of himself into hard-living genius millionaire Tony Stark and he’s great fun. One of Downey’s first comeback movies was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005, directed by Shane Black, who helms Iron Man 3. It was snarky, funny, and what is now called meta, a Hollywood piss-take starring a couple [...]

Real Life Horror Movie: Rausing Gets 10 Months

August 2, 2012 in Current Affairs, Entertainment, Film & TV, Health, Mental Health, News, People

In a story straight from Hollywood, multi-millionaire Hans Kristian Rausing, heir to the Tetra-Pak fortune, has received a 10 month suspended sentence after pretending his wife was still alive for more than two months after her passing. Sydney Morning Herald reports: For more than two months, Hans Kristian Rausing went about his business while the corpse of his wife Eva decomposed in their luxury home in central London. When friends or family asked about Eva, the billionaire’s son would give vague replies, never suggesting anything was awry. But the macabre pretence was dropped on July 9 when London police stopped [...]

Diana Biopic: Too Close To Home?

July 9, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV, People

After reporting on the amazing transformation Naomi Watts made to play the late Princess Diana in biopic Caught In Flight, that has since been renamed Diana, I had an interesting discussion on my personal blog “the musings of monique” with Melissa over how Prince William and Prince Harry must feel about this movie being made. After all, it is about a fairly controversial time in Diana’s life, and will focus on her relationship with heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan, as well as looking at her time with Dodi Fayed, who she was with at the time she died. The movie will also include [...]

The Top 10 Rom-Coms…for Blokes

July 4, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV

Girls…Want to spend a quiet night in front of  the TV with the man in your life?  Looking for a movie that both you and your man will enjoy? These are the Top 10 Rom-Coms for Blokes in my opinion: Annie Hall (1977) Arguably the first modern Rom-Com ever made, Woody Allen’s surreal and semi-autobiographical exploration of a failed relationship has lots going for it, especially blokes. Firstly, there Diane Keaton at her most Gorgeous. Then there’s the fact that Annie Hall includes the best Christopher Walken moment of any film. And finally, because this is the film that beat Star [...]

Film Review: What To Expect When You’re Expecting

June 5, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV, Pregnancy & Birth

Let me start this by saying that I am not now, nor have I ever been, pregnant. I have never tried to adopt or experienced infertility issues. Because of this, I have never read the book What To Expect When You’re Expecting, the baby self help book that this film is based on. We good? Awesome. I must admit, I went into the cinema with very low expectations. Not only because it’s reviews weren’t kind (it has a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but because it’s a movie about pregnancy, clearly there were going to be some really obviously bad [...]

I Wish I Could Apparate

June 4, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV, People, Self, Travel, Work

I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve been sitting there and have thought to myself “I wish Harry Potter were real”. Go ahead, mock me, but how amazing would it be to live in a world where magic like that existed? Where instead of the regular post, you received mail by Owl; imagine how much more exciting online shopping would get! But the thing that I wish existed the most (besides Sirius Black) is the ability to apparate. Not teleport; apparate. I’m a really lazy person. I don’t exercise, but it’s OK because I have low blood [...]

Film Review: The Lucky One

May 9, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV

I have to admit, I went into this film with relatively low expectations. Why? First of all, I love Nicholas Sparks. I own every single one of his books and all the related movies on DVD regardless of whether or not I actually like them. But as much as I love him, none of his films (with the exception of The Notebook) have been as fantastic as they could have been. Secondly, having read and enjoyed the book, I was really unsure of Zac Efron as the leading man, ex marine Logan Thibault. In my head, Logan is a rough-as-guts drifter [...]

The Sort-Of Sequel

May 1, 2012 in Comedy, Entertainment, Film & TV

Not too long ago, we were talking about sequels and how they seem to be everywhere. Since then, the “sort-of sequel” has made an appearance. What’s a “sort-of sequel”? I hear you ask. Well, now that you’ve brought it up, a “sort-of sequel” is where characters or storylines from a previous film are used to make a new film without being a proper sequel (can also be called a spin-off, but I think “sort-of sequel” sounds better, more original). Example: Evan Almighty.  Making the rounds at the box office this weekend, superhero film The Avengers became the most recent “sort-of sequel”. [...]

Porn for women. Feminist-style (Pics SFW)

April 18, 2012 in Relationships, Sex, Sexuality, Society

Feminism and porn. Unlikely bedfellows? Maybe not, says Louise Lush who has been blogging about porn and running adult websites since 2000. She’s also been busy making erotic films for straight women since 2008. One has to question how porn, well mainstream male-dominated porn, could have anything to do with empowering women? A hell of a lot it seems. It’s no secret that women watch porn. And no, not just with their boyfriends. Women are growing tired of the same testosterone driven fantasies. We have our own sexuality too and it would be nice to be able to find without [...]

Are Sequels Where It’s At? Or Was Milk A Bad Choice?

April 12, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV

It’s the sequel everyone has been talking about. When Will Ferrell turned up on Conan O’Brien recently dressed as alter-ego Ron Burgundy playing jazz flute, I could feel the excited anticipation building in my stomach. After hilariously insulting Conan’s appearance, he came out with this: “I want to announce this to everyone here in the Americas. To our friends in Spain, Turkey and the U.K. including England, that as of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel to Anchorman. It is official! There will be a sequel to Anchorman.” Ron Burgundy on [...]
