News: Facebook Adds Zombie Affiliation To User Profiles

April 1, 2013 in Current Affairs, News, Technology

You may not have seen this yet, but Facebook has added a new feature to its user profiles. You can now designate whether you want to be part of Team Human or Team Zombie in case of a Zombie Apocalypse. Facebook says this will help family and friends, and even government agencies, cope with the legal and moral dilemmas involved with a possible Zombie Apocalypse. It makes sense. In all the confusion that will be occurring during a Zombie Apocalypse, it will be useful to know if a family member or neighbour wants to be saved from becoming a Zombie, or if they are OK [...]

Random Acts of Kindness or Random Acts of Self-Promotion?

March 12, 2013 in Friendship, Lifestyle, Money, People, Society

The idea of random acts of kindness is a good one. Wikipedia defines a random act of kindness as “a selfless act performed by a person or people wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual person or people.” Further to that, being selfless is defined as being motivated to act without concern for oneself. I really like that idea. I like that fact that you just do something with the intention of just helping. But there is something with the random acts of kindness that really gets my goat. It’s when people use random acts of kindness as [...]

Screw the Fashion Rules

December 6, 2012 in Body Image, Fashion, Self, Society, Style

Fashion Rules. You know what I’m talking about, right? All the rules dictated to us by media, friends, family and society about what we should and shouldn’t wear. Fashion rules are a favourite topic for the media “Which dress is best for your body? Top ten jeans for your shape! Fashion dos and don’ts”. Telling us what fruits we look like, what colours to put together or not put together, what styles suit us best. Between myself and my friends on Twitter, we came up some examples like: “If you’re a pear shape, don’t wear colours on your bottom half. [...]

Reality TV and Softcore Porn: is this the future? (SFW)

December 4, 2012 in Celebrity, Dating, Entertainment, Film & TV, People, Relationships, Self, Sex, Sexuality, Society

I am officially hooked on the The Real L Word, a Los Angeles reality TV show based on the everyday lives of a group of LA lesbians. There’s no shortage of hookups, fights, love and lust in each episode and the amount of drama that goes on between these girls makes you feel thankful for your somewhat drama-free life. As I watch some of the girls struggle with personal relationships it makes me wonder just how comfortable we’ve become sharing ourselves, warts and all, online or in a reality TV show. Is it important to keep a few skeletons in [...]

Twitter vs Tumblr: A Kitchen Table Discussion

November 14, 2012 in Fiction, Humour, Technology

“Whatcha doin’?” he asked, placing a cup of coffee in front of her on the kitchen table. “Updating my Tumblr,” she said, ignoring the cup of coffee for the moment. “Isn’t that the thing 13 year old girls use to post pictures of One Direction to each other?” “Unfortunately, yes…but it’s also my favourite social media platform.” She took a sip of her coffee. “Pffft…I’m happy just using Twitter.” “Well, that’s the thing. There’s not that much difference between Twitter and Tumblr. They both use a follow-me, follow-you system you know.” “So, I can choose who I want to follow, and [...]

Why Does Getting Married Scare The Bejesus Out Of Me?

November 13, 2012 in Dating, Entertainment, Film & TV, Marriage, People, Relationships, Self, Wedding

I read a quote the other day which really resonated with me. “If you knew you were going to meet the love of your life in one year, how different would that one year be?” Growing up I always thought I would meet the right person, settle down and eventually get married. I’ve always wanted kids and it’s no lie that I have definitely been more career focused than marriage focused since I left high school. After finishing school it was all about what university I was going to enrol in and what course I was keen to major in. At [...]

Online Support Group: I’m Breaking Up With You

September 10, 2012 in Health, Lifestyle, Self, Technology, Work

Dear illness specific online support group: I am breaking up with you. Calling things off. Walking out. Taking my records and changing my number. It’s not me it is you. I have dabbled in the world of online support groups ever since the Internet became available, back in 1996. My school librarian thought a good way to spend my time while not participating in PE classes was to research my condition (Ichthyosis) on the Internet. Maybe contact some people who also have it. And so I did. It beat doing cross country runs. (Though I spent more time researching Savage [...]

Letting Go of Words on a Screen

September 6, 2012 in Dating, Entertainment, Mental Health, People, Relationships, Self, Technology

Darren Hayes, my personal love philosopher, wrote the lyric “I shouldn’t be holding on, but I am still holding on for you”. These words sum up the unrequited love situation that has been going on in my heart and head for just over two years. I know I shouldn’t still love him, but I do. If I was my friend, I would tell myself to pull myself together. That he doesn’t deserve me in his life. That I should have cut my losses two years ago. Delete and unfriend. I know I should have. It’s only me prolonging this pain. What we had [...]

Maree & Facebook: a love affair turned sour.

September 3, 2012 in Entertainment, Friendship, People, Relationships, Society, Technology

Recently my love affair with Facebook has turned sour. It’s just not what it used to be. I used to have MySpace, many moons ago. A friend begged me to switch to Facebook. I agreed, thinking it would never last, but it took over. Not just me; but the world. A revolution of sorts. I have 437 friends on Facebook. Out of those 437, I have met & know 436. Yes: only one person I haven’t met in the flesh. I don’t add strangers, or people ‘FB’ suggests for me. I used it purely as a means of communicating with [...]

Hate Reading: Do You Do It?

August 14, 2012 in Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV, Technology

I was at my friends house. We were having a glass of wine and some cheese. All of a sudden, she perked up, her eyes widened and she said: “ERMAHGAWD, I cannot believe I haven’t shown you this yet, you will die!” She opened up her laptop and typed an address into the browser. It was a blog. A blog created by a girl we knew at uni, for whom we both had a mutual disdain for. As I had deleted this girl from Facebook on the day we graduated, I really hadn’t heard boo about her since then and [...]
