Why I’m Vegetarian (and I don’t need meat)

February 18, 2013 in Food & Recipes, Health, Lifestyle, Nutrition

I’ve been vegetarian for a long time. Not because it’s ‘hip’ or trendy. I was born and raised one, I didn’t eat meat until I succumbed at Maccas while wagging school: that chicken burger was SO good. When I moved out of home at 18, I started to incorporate more meat into my diet, but not red meat. It grossed me out, unless it was a cheeseburger (which I figured probably wasn’t really a whole lot of genuine meat) or mince in a bolognaise sauce. I never ate steak.  Due to religious constraints, (I am Seventh-Day Adventist) I still haven’t [...]

Stop and Think? Nah, I’ll Just Do

November 20, 2012 in Children, Home, Lifestyle, Marriage, Mental Health, Money, Mothers, Music, Pets, Self, Work

As a little girl my mother would constantly implore me to think about what I was doing. She would remind me of this with the oft repeated phrase “For goodness sake, Tamsin, why don’t you just think?!” I’ve thought about this advice a lot over the last couple of weeks as I made a couple of mistakes at work that I surely would have avoided had I only stopped to think. Last night on Twitter I had a conversation with Mrs Ceee Ceee (with thanks to the Queen of Gin… she told me to put that in there) about people who have a [...]

How Do You Choose a Religion?

September 14, 2012 in People, Religion, Self, Society

One of my favourite quotes relating to religion and atheism is by Richard Dawkins: I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. It’s an interesting quote – and while I don’t think that, by itself, it can totally refute someone’s faith, it is something to think about. I’ve blogged about my own perspective a few times – that while I can respect someone’s decision to believe in some kind of higher power, I have less respect [...]

Are Multivitamins Being Marketed To The “Worried Well”?

August 7, 2012 in Current Affairs, Health, Lifestyle, News, Nutrition, Pregnancy & Birth, Self, Society

If anyone was to look at my desk at work they’d think I was super healthy. I have Blackmores Executive Stress Formula B, recommended to me by my mum, which helps reduce symptoms of stress. But I’m not an executive and, to be perfectly honest, I don’t get all that stressed. I think it’s normal to get a bit anxious from time to time but I bought the vitamins nonetheless. Why? Probably because my mum swears by them, but I’ve only ever taken less than five from the bottle so who am I to judge? Mum is a teacher and [...]

FoodSwitch App

February 16, 2012 in Food & Recipes, Nutrition, Technology

An iPhone application has been created to help consumers make informed choices about what they food in their mouths. The FoodSwitch app, created by health researcher The George Institute for Global Health and insurance company Bupa uses a barcode scanner to bring up traffic light information. Australian consumer watchdog Choice has been campaigning for the introduction of a “traffic light” labeling system since 2009 and although the government has been resistant to bring this in as legislation, it seems the idea has been grabbed with both hands and made into an application for iPhone uses, with Android versions to come.
