Stay Young? No. Stay Happy.

April 30, 2013 in Body Image, Face, Gender, Health, People, Society, Style

When we are young, we often don’t think about the person we will be when we are 30 or 40. In fact, we don’t even think of ourselves reaching that age. It all seems to come back to the stigma attached to growing old. But, it doesn’t have to be such a bad thing. We often hear middle aged women talk about how young people should, ‘live while you have the chance’, or thinking aloud with, ‘I wish I was your age again.’ Why do they have such strong views on youth? It’s one of two things: the regret of [...]

Elsie Jones was excited. Today was Wednesday, and she hoped for a visit from her son and family.  Days like this were the only real break in the monotony of living in a nursing home. Elsie should know- she had been a resident at The Meadows Home for nearly six years now. Six long years, she thought with a sigh. She had watched all the daytime television she could stand. Six years of soft, bland food had just about left her at her wits end. Elsie had been the only chef in the small, but popular restaurant on the outskirts [...]

Advice To My 15 Year Old Self

August 13, 2012 in Body Image, Dating, Fitness, Friendship, Health, Mental Health, People, Relationships, Self

Have you ever wished you could go back in time and give yourself some advice? I know that as I sit here at 32, there are certainly things I wish I could warn my fifteen-year-old self about. I posed this question to my friends on Facebook and the prominent theme in their answers were to not doubt yourself, not conform, that it’s ok to deviate from the norm. As well as some serious fashion advice: no to perms and Tencil jeans. If I had the opportunity to write a letter and advise my much younger self, this is what I [...]

Hang On…When Did I Become A Creepy Old Man?

July 24, 2012 in Dating, Gender, People, Relationships, Self, Sex, Sexuality, Society

There is a stage in every man’s life when he realises he’s not wanted in the playground anymore. Before then, he can go play on the swings, or the slide, or the monkey bars… and no one bats an eyelid. Then one day, everything changes. People look at you differently.  You can see it in their eyes. “What is he doing? Why is he here? He should act his age. He looks suspicious.” You still want to play on the swings and the slide and the monkey-bars, but society suddenly says it’s no longer OK. Access Denied… Forbidden! For some men [...]

Too Young For War, And Now (Perhaps) Too Old

July 18, 2012 in People, Society

I was born in 1966. My brother, who is 21 years older than me, was in the Army at that time. He had been conscripted to serve during the Vietnam War. As circumstances would have it, he was badly injured in an accident before he was shipped overseas and was discharged from the Army. Two of his childhood friends weren’t so lucky (if you can call a badly broken arm lucky). They never came home. I’ve never really had to face the prospect of going to war. The next major conflict that Australia was involved in was the first Gulf [...]

Is 32 The New 50?

July 13, 2012 in Body Image, Hair, Health, Home, Lifestyle, Nails, People, Self, Society, Style, Work

I’m 32.  Recently I went to a hairdresser who is not my regular hairdresser. She commented on my hair, asking if my boss minded its colour, and when I said it had never been an issue, she suggested it should be and perhaps I could ‘tone it down’ to something more ‘age appropriate’. Those who know me will be aware that my wardrobe is filled with mostly black staple pieces that I will add a coloured accessory to- be it a scarf, jewellery, nails or even my hair. That’s me. But this exchange with the over zealous and fairly immature [...]

30 Things Before You’re 30

June 26, 2012 in Books, Children, Dating, Entertainment, Fashion, Friendship, Humour, Lifestyle, Marriage, Mothers, People, Relationships, Self, Sex, Society, Stories, Style, Work

Now, I’m not 30 yet but I’m getting darn close. Getting older doesn’t really bother me all that much, I’ve always said I would love to be a cranky old lady that can torment teenagers and chase people with my walking stick. It sounds like fun! Which is why I found it interesting to read “30 Things Every Woman Should Have And Should Know before 30.” I find these lists amusing more than anything as it gives us all, even the over 30s, a chance to reassess our goals. Are we where we thought we’d be? Have we grown up [...]
