Video: The Child Abuse Message Aimed at Children

May 7, 2013 in Children, Current Affairs, Health, Human Rights, News, Parenting

This video demonstrates a new anti-child abuse advertisement which contains a hidden message for children. When viewed from an adult’s height the image shows a sad child and the message “Sometimes child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it” but when viewed from a child’s height, or anyone under 4 foot 5 inches tall, the image shows a bruised child and the additional message “If somebody hurts you, phone us and we’ll help you” with the phone number. A really powerful message, a great idea and a wonderful way to reach children while they’re standing with the person [...]

Real Beauty and My Ideal World

April 23, 2013 in Body, Body Image, Entertainment, Face, Gender, Health, Mental Health, People, Society, Style

Last week a Dove ad went viral and while Mandi has given her opinion, I wished to give mine. It features a forensic artist drawing a number of “real women” without seeing them – he draws by the women’s description. The women describe their perceived flaws rather than their best features. “Tell me about your chin?” the artist asks one woman. “It kind of protrudes a little when I smile”, she says. “Your jaw?” he asks another. “My mother told me I have a big jaw” she replies. After this first drawing session, the women are encouraged to spend time with [...]

Real Beauty Sketches by Dove: My Take

April 19, 2013 in Body, Body Image, Current Affairs, Face, Gender, Health, Mental Health, News, People, Self, Society

This week, Dove released a video called Real Beauty Sketches. I had been holding off watching this, purely because of the people’s reaction to this video. There were those who thought, while the message was lovely, “ERMAGHERD Dove is owned by the same company that make Lynx body spray! How can we listen to anything they say?” Apparently both brands being owned by Unilever is enough for people to miss the point Dove were trying to get across. Then there were those who were almost euphoric with how awesome it is, and how awesome the message was, and awesome Dove is, and [...]

Married In Italy & Monique’s Celeb Top 5

October 26, 2012 in Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV, Marriage, Pregnancy & Birth, Wedding

When writing these introductions, I wish that I could type the way I speak in person but sadly,  it sometimes doesn’t come across that way. For instance, I want to start with “hey hey hey” but said with some attitude. Now if you don’t hear the attitude or the subtle nuances in my voice (yes, using big words here), it will just look like I’ve repeated myself. Sigh. I hope this will change one day. It’s been a fun week in H0llywood this week with some awesome videos and what has got to be my favourite wedding photo ever. Enjoy… [...]

Bad Advertising = Good Marketing?

October 16, 2012 in Celebrity, Entertainment, Film & TV

Today the new ad for Chanel No. 5 starring Brad Pitt went viral. It was popping up everywhere, I saw it on MamaMia and Woogsworld online and it even made the Channel Ten News. The ad was being slammed for how bad it was. But here’s the thing: It got us talking. It takes a lot to make a splash in advertising these days. For every “Not Happy, Jan” there are literally millions of ads no one ever remembers. A lot of it is hit and miss. Some ads are so memorable they enter the popular vernacular (like “the best [...]

I Just Can’t Bring Myself To Take Leave

August 14, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV, Health, Lifestyle, Mental Health, Money, People, Self, Society, Travel, Work

I just can’t bring myself to take leave. Unless I actually have to take leave, I just don’t. The thing is, I only get 4 weeks a year so I’m paranoid if I take leave I’ll be wasting it. Some people take a day here and a day there, the only leave I’ve taken in the last 2 years was when my boss told me I had too much leave, and when Stepdaughter comes to visit. It began back when I worked in marketing and taking leave, or a sick day for that matter, was akin to writing “Be disappointed [...]

Are You Sick? Don’t Soldier On!

July 30, 2012 in Entertainment, Film & TV, Health, People, Society

“NO! NOOOOOO! Don’t soldier on! If you’re disease-ridden and sick, stay home and keep your damn germs to yourself!” That was a facebook status a friend of mine posted recently, and I have to agree. The “Soldier On” tagline is great one, it plays on our insecurities – we don’t want to be whinger, or soft, or even let people at work down, we want to have a stiff upper lip and soldier on when we get sick. But within the last few years I have come to the firm conclusion that soldiering on is a bloody stupid thing to [...]

Carefree Forced To Defend ‘Acti-Fresh’ Advert

July 17, 2012 in Body Image, Current Affairs, Entertainment, Film & TV, Gender, Health, News

Carefree have been forced to defend their latest advertisement for the product Acti-Fresh after the Advertising Standards Bureau received numerous complaints. NineMSN reports: Carefree has been forced to defend its new ad that shows a naked woman and uses the words “vaginal discharge”, saying it is a celebration of the female body. The Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) received complaints about the ad for Acti-Fresh liners as soon as it was launched last night. In the ad a naked young woman discusses vaginal discharge in a white room, her body artfully hidden behind a bunch of white flowers. The ad uses [...]

Kardashian Photoshop Fail

April 11, 2012 in Body Image, Celebrity, Pregnancy & Birth

This picture was released this week to promote the swimwear line from the Kardashian Collection on the Bruno Schiavi Facebook page. Yes, it’s the Kardashians, again. They’re in swimwear. Cue eye rolling and exasperated sighs. Apart from the obvious photoshopping (perfect skin, hair, Kim’s hips noticeably slimmed), two things stood out to me. Firstly, why is Khloe Kardashian Odom always covered up? Is it because they think she is the “fat one”? Every picture I see promoting this clothing line has her more covered up than the other two and I find it really offensive. This “cover up” is also evident in [...]

Everyone Is Secretly Judging Your Loo

March 27, 2012 in Home, Lifestyle, Self

I, like many people who have slight perfectionist tendencies (OK, obsessive compulsive tendencies) and who get stressed, tend to have a little panic before people come to my house. I imagine that the houses they have left are not like my house. They don’t have a laundry basket of clothes waiting to be ironed, or dishes that I haven’t put in the dishwasher because I haven’t unloaded the last lot. I imagine they have perfect houses, with fresh flowers in vases on their bedside tables, chandeliers and colour coordinated towels. And I know these houses exist because I’ve seen them [...]
