Hello to my lovely readers out there and welcome to Monique’s Celeb Top 5 where I talk about what’s been the happy haps in Hollywood in the past week (points for whoever can tell me where I got “happy haps” from). Again, if you would like more detailed news, head over to “the musings of monique” to check out “the low down according to mon“, a weekly post, but don’t worry, you won’t be getting exactly the same news word for word! Now here’s the goss:
1. Modern Family star gets a new kidney
In news that shocked everyone, in the latest issue of US teen magazine Seventeen, Sarah Hyland revealed that she had a kidney transplant from her father in April after suffering from kidney dysplasia since the age of nine (she is 21). The Modern Family actress, who plays Haley Dunphy, was facing a lifetime of dialysis if she didn’t get the lifesaving transplant. In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America which you can watch here, Sarah told journalist Cecelia Vega that she was in pain constantly and that you’ll notice that most of her scenes show her sitting down or leaning against something for support. On screen mum Julie Bowen has been around to help her clean her apartment and on and off screen love interest Matt Prokop has been the ever doting boyfriend. So glad she’s doing better!
2. Lots of surprise cancellations for the 2012 fall TV schedule
When season finales start airing (generally in May), news starts to creep out from network executives over which shows are being renewed, cancelled, moved to a different time slot (and sometimes new network) and the number of episodes in the seasons. There have been a few shock cancellations as well as many expected. CSI: Miami has been cancelled after ten seasons but both CSI and CSI: NY are safe. The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Secret Circle was cancelled, as was Sarah Michelle Gellar’s drama Ringer and Alcatraz. 30 Rock was renewed for a shortened final season of only 13 episodes. Others that showed their final episodes have been One Tree Hill, House and Desperate Housewives. Click here for a full list of renewals and cancellations.
3. JLo named most influential celebrity
Forbes has released it’s annual list of “World’s Most Powerful Celebrities” and what came as a surprise to everyone (OK, a surprise to me) was the singer/actress/dancer/reality TV judge Jennifer Lopez beat out Oprah Winfrey and Justin Bieber for the top spot. I know she’s been in the public eye heaps lately but I never expected her to come out on top. Also in the top ten were Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg and Katy Perry. Head over to Forbes for the full list. After this announcement, there has also been speculation the Jenny From The Block is leaving American Idol although there has been no official word yet.
4. Disney takes over the X Factor
After weeks of speculation, FOX has officially confirmed that former Disney star Demi Lovato and former Mousekeeter Britney Spears have joined their hit show, The X Factor as judges. The singers will be replacing Paula Abdul and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on the judging panel with L.A. Reid and the show’s creator Simon Cowell. Britney is very excited about being on the show saying “just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants … they’re so young and they’re trying to fulfil their dreams. It’s just a whole beautiful concept. It’s just really cool”. In other news from Simon Cowell, the reality veteran has said he is puzzled by The Voice saying that if it really is just about the voice, why isn’t it on the radio? Interesting.
5. Babies named after places is the trend in Hollywood
As usual, there are many babies being born to Hollywood celebs and it seems that recently there has been a trend in babies being names after places (whether or not it was because of the place itself). Thor actor and Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky welcomed baby girl India Rose on May 11. The happy couple have since been spotted out with their little cutie. Grey’s Anatomy alum Katherine Heigl and hubby Josh Kelley released the name of their second adopted daughter, also choosing a place, but a slightly different spelling. Naleigh is a big sister to Adalaide Marie Hope.
If you want to know what’s going on with the John Travolta sexual harassment scandal and even more record breaking news from The Avengers head on over to “musings“.
Just for fun…
Sofia Vergara’s son made her a super cute video for Mothers Day featuring never before seen home footage and I think it’s the perfect way to begin the weekend, looking at a son’s love for his mother.
