I recently had a conversation with someone where they told me "You look feminine, you are kind and your voice is high, but you don't dress very feminine".

At first I was just surprised. The more I think back over that statement the more I think about stereotypes.

Personally, I am feminine. I would even go so far as to say I'm girly. But not in an American way. Not with pink and flowers and lace. No, I'm girly like the French do it - black, white, red. Tailoring and trousers.

It's interesting how not only does gender influence stereotypes but also location. Brand Men in Australia, for example, is meant to be beer-swilling, ute-driving and flannie-wearing. Might be completely different elsewhere.

Something to think about.

I'm totally with you - I think it's just as damaging to force boys to grow up under a stereotype of strength, hardness and aggression as it is to force girls to conform to the opposite attributes. While it's now decidedly faux-pas to characterise women as housewives, somehow it still seems okay to paint men as breadwinners and the ones who are ALWAYS expected to be 'strong'. When I think of my male friends, most of them are every bit as sensitive as me; we have more or less the same insecurities and struggle with the same things. Guys are allowed to struggle just as much as girls are, but this idea seems yet to become 'fashionable'.
